I think I've found a new way to freak people out with a flex pen :)
This reminded me of something I read somewhere else about finding test strips in places. I was scrubbing the kitchen floor and found one in a corner somewhere, and thought its like a little bread crumb trail of "there was a diabetic here" ohh wait thats me.

Geez... makes me want to write a letter to the editor. I dare them to try and prick themselves with that discarded flexpen! I am conscientious with my sharps disposal but the empty pens? they go in the trash. Is that a no-no?

The article said they found lots and lots of sharps. maybe they thought the flex pen made a better photo?

I never know whether to put empty / out of date insulin pens/cartridges/ bottles in the trash or in the sharps bin. they're not sharp, but i'd be freaked if I was a sanitation worker who found one.

If in doubt... put it in the sharps bin!

I thought it could have been one of those needles that are clear plastic and not white plastic... i have some of those... but yeh, it does look a lot like there's no needle there...

I think you have to ask the question though... if you weren't diabetic and didn't know about the tools we use in our daily lives... seeing something like that could make you concerned.

I think as diabetics we should all be careful where we throw things away, or we coule end up making a bad reputation for ourselves!

Where do most of you dispose your flexpens and insulin vials? I just throw mine in with the everyday trash. I put my syringes, along with their needles in a sharp container and when it is full into the trash. I called the local trash co. and they said that was OK. They just said label the sharps, so some curious trash collector doesn't look inside to see what is in the container and then accidently get stuck. I put "Used Diabetic syringes" on the coffee containers I use and tape it shut, before I put it into a trash bag and then in the trash can. Is there something else I should do?
