At breakfast today I miss calculated the muesli so maybe it’s not the best example but it highlighted the issue and it's not the first time I’ve had this spike. I guess the question is how can I combat this? Inject 15mins early or more insulin? I thought milk/muesli were fairly low GI and wouldn’t experience a spike like this, it just annoys me because I totally lose concentration and I can’t imagine is does my A1c any good. I think I might have to weigh the two separately to stop repeats.

10:50am: 5.1 & 1unit of Insulin
10:50am: eat breakfast (miss weighed muesli did about 15-20g (5carbs) more, stupid mistake I know)
12:10pm: 10.4 (feeling thirsty)
12:26pm: 8.6
1:02pm: 7.8

Milk 150ml = 7.5g of Carbs (GI 25)

Home Made Muesli 50g = 13.12g of Carbs (GI of normal (natural) muesli 57)

I'm the same way in the morning. I had to cut my breakfast carbs back to 30 max, preferably 15. I also bolus 30 minutes early, and I super-bolus. A super bolus borrows later basals and moves them up front to help out with the spike.

What I'd do on mdi, which is what I assume you do, would be to cut way down on the initial carbs, bolus early, and bolus some extra. Then I'd have a small snack mid-morning to cover the impending low. You need to work it all out for yourself though!

Of course this assumes we have similar patterns.

Do you make up for the "loss" in carbs later in the day? I could split my breakfast in two but that causes other problems, since mornings are usually busy. Would you not see a bg drop before you start eating when doing your bolus 30mins early? I seriously considering doing my bolus early, I don't fancy like risking a super bolus since I might forget to snack. Currently I do not bolus before breakfast, I have considered swapping items out for lower GI but evidently it’s not going to make much of a different.

I took an example day:

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
20g/81g/74g (carbs) = 177g of carbs
12%/46%/42%
