Hello Everyone :)

I was diagnosed (type 2) on April 1st this year (unfortunately it was NOT an April Fool's joke). My diabetes was probably triggered by my Hemochromatosis (iron overload disease) it's common for HH patients to develop Diabetes within months of developing HH.

Fortuately for me both are well under control now. However it was a bit of a haul, at the beginning all my monitor would say is HI, but now I am down to 6.0 - 6.8's on a regular basis. (108 - 122 for you Americans reading this). My last A1C was 6.2 :)

I'm married to a wonderful man who is very supportive (so supportive he eats my diet if you can believe it) . No kids except of the four legged fur covered variety, Maxmillian,my feline son is 5.

I live in a burb of Vancouver BC Canada called Port Coquitlam.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. I've never heard of this disorder before but I don't know too much anyway.

Hello TVBabe,

I'm a type 2 from your part of the world - I live in Surrey.

I thought you might be interested in knowing about a talk show interview I heard recently on CKNW Radio with a Canadian doctor, Dr. Chris Willington, who has written a book about hemochromatosis called Ironic Health. She sounded very impressive and knowledgable. I didn't catch where the book is available, but I know she has a website where it can be ordered.

It sounds as if you're doing really well in getting your diabetes under control. Good for you!

Actually Karen if you listened to that interview you might have heard an email I sent in....they read it on air and Dr Willington told me my endo was on the ball :)

I have to have monthly phlebotomies to keep my numbers in check. Increased iron levels in my blood also has a habit of increasing my blood sugars. The only icky part of it is my sugars jump on my phlebotomy days so I have to pamper myself for around 48 hours after each one.

(Phlebotomies are basically a blood donation, much like some of you might go to the Red Cross every so often to donate blood, I go to the hospital once a month and they take me down a pint. The theory is if they drain off a pint, then your body has to reproduce that blood and it dilutes the iron levels in your system)

I do remember that e-mail and Dr. Willington's response - more evidence that it's a small world! I paid more attention to that program than I might have otherwise because I know someone with hemochromatosis, and I knew so little about it. I was very impressed with Dr. Willington.
