So how many of you are on Lantus?
And how many units do you take?
I'm on it, and I take 52 units at Bed.

I love Lantus...after a few years of "adjusting"....now I take 24-25 units each morning. I don't like night time doses...do much better with morning dose.

yeah, they had me doing it in the morning along with my humalog, but that wasn't helping. I like the night time doses better, and I also LOVE lantus.
I was on it for 3 months.
40 units in the morning and another 40 at night.
Got off it and now on Janumet pills.

I am a Lantus user, can't say I love the stuff, it's neither friend nor foe. It’s more of a fence sitter that keeps changing sides. I am on 9units in the evenings (when I don’t overdose :o).

I have you all beat, I take 97 units at night. I tried splitting it and as it made little difference, decided I didn't like taking that extra shot every day.

Uh, now I'm not sure I belong on here any more.
18 units at 11:30 pm every night. haven't had to up the amount in over 3 years.
So, does 18 units really mean I have Diabetes, or is this just psychosomatic manifestation of an illness?

I have been using Lantus for about 5 years now. About 15 units a day, split between morning and before-bed shots. But I also have to inject 8 units of Actrapid (Regular) to help cover higher basal requirements in the morning. The consistency of Lantus is good, but the lack of a peak is a mixed blessing. It means that Lantus is not very flexible and does not handle variation in the basal profile very well. :(

I've been taking it for about 3 years. I take 14 units in the AM and 6 units in the pm. Weird, but effective.
And to say that I have a love/hate relationship with it would be putting it mildly.

I've BEEN on it, and it worked well enough, but was some stinging son of a gun and **** pen (back then). Switched to Levemir and loving it! The Novopen 4 is brilliant :D
I take 48-50 units of Levemir in the PM when on MDI... Now i'm currently back to pumping :T

Hm.. I take lantus, but only 8 units at bedtime. I was diagnosed only a month ago and am probably still honeymooning. Probably why its so low.

Until last week, when I started pumping. I took 15 units in the evening. I think I may very well still have some insulin of my own left.

I've used Lantus for almost 4 years and it has greatly reduced hypos for me. It took me a while to realize that it was only covering me for 18-20 hours and consequently I have had to split my doses to 26 U in the morning and 22 in the evening about 12 hours apart. After fine tuning the doses I have had great consistent results from it.

:) Hi,
I started Lantus last June sfter 25 years of protophane and it seems good. I take 60 units at around 6pm and that is better
for me then taking it later. I also have humalog with meals
I was doing 32-ish U/day of Lantus. I switched to Levemir, and am taking the same amount.
Why the switch? Supposed better consistency and fewer hypos. So far, I agree with that. I also wanted something shorter-acting, so I could adjust my daytime basal when I plan to exercise... without having too little insulin during the night. (NPH finishes in 5.5 hours -- too quickly for overnight coverage.)
I'm taking 33u of Lantus at night (and Humalog before meals).
I don't understand why in your profile you say you are type 2?
I do 25 units lantus at breakfast and humalog each meal, but I thought I was type 1? I thought lantus plus humalog defines type 1? Prior to lantus+humalog, I did lente insulin for 29 years. I think I'm type 1? I don't ask the doctor too much - I just let him give me a prescription - what does the doctor know? I use insulin because it lets me eat. Who defines type 1 or type 2? - the FDA? - the FBI? - the CIA? - the JDF?

... I thought lantus plus humalog defines type 1? ....
No, an autoimmune attack on the beta cells defines Type 1, and insulin resistance defines Type 2. Both of them can be treated with Lantus and Humalog.

Thanks.
That is as clear a definition as I can remember.
Now, what was that definition, again?
I guess it really doesn't matter, as I find in using insulin, I can eat - that is the bottom line for me. I could care less if I have an attack on beta cells or if I have insulin resistance. This stuff of insulin is olde hatt for me these days. I wanna eat, I do insulin - simple. Well, not so simple if there is a miscalculation, but simple in terms of doing the stuff. I am not really concerned in really knowing if I am type 1 or type 2. Maybe someday I should have some tests done to find out, but I don't see any sense in the knowledge - the solution is still probably doing insulin. Insulin allows me to eat, eating allows me to live. So far, I like that.

I am on lantus; 25u at bedtime. It seems to be working pretty reliably once I got the dose dialed in. I have pretty consistent morning fasting BG's. I also do novolog before meals, I am still on both of my oral meds but will be discussing them with my doc at my next appt. I have become uncertain whether or not I am a true type 2. I don't know if the oral meds ever really helped me or if early on, I was having results from diet and exercise alone...

This does not include the 90 units or so of Novolog I take during the day. I count carbs, seldom ever have more than 20 at a time, but will still have over 200 BS, sometimes. I guess I am very Insulin resistant.

I have taken it since last Summer. If Im in intensive training it's 8 to 10 units per day in the evening, if Im on vacation make that 14 to 16. works for me, i also use novorapid. my latest and favourite discovery is a pen that delivers half units, my insulin sensitivity is very high at the moment (training about 10 hours a week) so i was unable to correct without snacking....i urge you all to get a half unit pen!!

I take 11u of Lantus normally around 10pm.
If I up that even by 1u I end up feeling kinda weird (hypo type symptoms etc)
Generally I think that Lantus has provided more stability especially while sleeping.

I currently take 38u of Lantus at 10:00 pm. I will probably be going up to at least 40u next week. I also average about 40 - 50u overall of Novolog daily.
I think I felt better on Levemir. I woke up more refreshed in the mornings. However, there are so many factors involved, it may have just been the fact that I had started on insulin, period, that made me feel so much better.
Regards,
I've been on Lantus for over a year now, and I take 18u a day, split into two shots of 9u at 9am and 9pm. I do that for two weeks, and then I add an extra unit for two weeks. On and on that cycle to goes, to match the ups & downs of my hormones.
I'm quite impressed with Lantus. I had a horrible time trying to compete with the peak of NPH (Protophane as we call it here). Lunch time was always a bother especially if I was out. I hated having to eat to a schedule! I either got low, or narrowly avoiding a low, every lunch time. I got high every morning and every evening when the Protophane was weakest. I also had to go to bed with a higher BG because Protophane would lower me in the early hours :(
I'm sooo glad we have better insulins these days! However Protophane was a lifesaver in its day, and is still helpful for a lot of people.
But Lantus rocks :)

I recently switched from Lantus to Levemir. I feel better on the latter -- more refreshed in the mornings, to be sure.
YMMV.

My daughter (age 11) is on 46u of Lantus. She had been taking it just before bedtime, but her evening bg readings were consistently high, so our CDE suggested we split it with 10u in the morning and 36 at bedtime. It's too soon to see if that's the answer but my gut feeling is it's not. (She's also taking Novolog for meals & snacks.)

I just switched to Lantus and Novorapid from Novolin 30/70(since '95)
My first Lantus injection was 30u on Saturday night and my Blood Sugar was 2 in the middle of the night. Same thing Sunday night so I dropped my evening dose to 28u and had a Fasting of 7.1 this AM.
So far I'd rather go back to the 30/70 but it's only been a few days. More injections more testing and more extremes in Blood sugars.

If that's true then I'm both.LOL! I've had diabetes for 40 years and apparently have now become somewhat resistant,as my mega doses of lantus and novolog can attest to.

It's the hand that's been dealt ,what should she do? she and I am the same way, this is what we have. it's not fun,but it's what we live with everyday. I wish it could be better, but it's not. You are lucky.

I think we should make a big distinction between control and the amount of insulin you take. Yes control can be harder with high insulin resistance but then it’s hard even with low insulin resistance. I cannot correct unless I’m above 8mmol/L using a half unit of bolus and mistakes at meal times can be dangerous with large amounts of carbs. It’s crazy the amount of variation in this lovely disease ;) .

I have been on Lantus for 5 years now. For the first 2 years, I was taking 24 units 1x day, but that turned out to be way too much and for the last 3 years my dosage has been cut in half. Currently I do 12 units total in a 50/50 12-hour split.

some of you split lantus between 2 shots (breakfast, bed) and some of you take it only in the morning....do you have better control this way?

It does make sense when you consider it can run out before 24 hours. It also makes you less dependant on one very important shot getting good absorption. I've had those days where it didn't seem to work at all. I have a fair amount of scar tissue.

Well I personally prefer not to do an extra injection ;) if you split it you end up with two smaller holes instead of one big hole. Its swings and roundabouts. It depends how much the hole in your Lantus coverage is affecting you, are you getting rapid swings around the time you do your injection? I know I get spikes from it after injecting and eating a meal in the evening.
garnett_21
04-29-2008, 08:38 PM
shiftzor - if it keeps me in better control, I don't mind doing an extra injection....don't remember not doing it....18 years and counting!
currently, I'm running higher than I want to....who isnt? lol but, I take lantus at dinner (6 PM) and if I don't eat enough at bed if my BG is good levels, I crash....if I'm 250-300 at bed, and I have 2 carbs minimum, I start my day around 100....otherwise I wake up with a low....but my morning BG is usually fine....my lunch is usually mid 100's....dinner tends to be higher....and bed is higher too....any suggestions?? I may bring this up with my doctor when I go next week
I take my lantus as:
10u - am
14u - pm
the reason is I tend to rise during the course of the day and overnight so the extra lantus in the evening helps keep that in check..
