So, I remember at first thinking, what was the big deal with coding? Well, 25 tests later (and a crazy two days of much lower BG) I realize I am an idiot! Anyone care to tell me the difference between codes? 1 vs 22?

There's no way to figure out the difference. Those readings are gone, completely untrustworthy.

21? Half way to knowing the answer to "life, the universe, and everything!"

I have recently received an OneTouch UltraSmart, almost immediately I got put off by the need to code in the number every 25 tests. I can easily see my self doing what you just did. I don’t see the point, my contour just keeps going no matter which strip i stick in it. However I think I will start to use the ultra smart when I become more mobile in the coming months, needing to do insulin and carbs on the move. ;)

Now that codeless meters are out, you'd theink the feds everywhere would outlaw these coded meters asap. One hurried change can conviebably put one of our lives at risk.
Stupid disease.

I totallly agree there. I'm surprised Lifescan, basically the leader of diabetes testing in my opinion, hasn't gone to codeless meters yet. Seems they are kinda slow in that area. If they came out with one, I'd have it in a heartbeat.

I believe the OneTouch Select, which is currently available only in mail order, is codeless.
I love my Lite.

My meter, (which talks by the way), has always in the year and a half i've had it...said "the code number is 13", i've never gotten a bottle of strips that said anythin but that so i figured it was just ummm...i dunno lol
course its also really big an bulky and i wish they(my insurance) didnt assume someone who's visually impaired would want a talking meter because this thing doesnt fit in my purse...but thats a rant for a different place heh

My mail order strips all usually have the same code, so I change the code at the most 4 times a year.
I can't say I've ever had any huge variation in bg between having the correct and/or incorrect code on the meter. My nurse used to check my meter and see that the code was off, tell me how inaccurate it was, I'd recheck with the correct code and the number would be within 10. Heck I can get that much difference by using a different finger or different meter with the same blood sample.
The old Accu-Cheks used to have code chips to insert into the meter.. I thought those were cool and collected them for a while. :)
The One Touch Select is what will be the Ultra Link (at least as far as I can tell from the pictures on Carelink). So no coding there, and Freestyle has their Freedom and Lite now with no coding.

I also use mail in and usually my code was 4 or 17. I can think of a few occassions where I tested and then realized I forgot to change the code and retested. There was rarely much of a difference. Not very scientific, but there ya have it.

I almost always get either 9 or 17. I have never gotten different codes in the same box. I have only goofed up once and caught myself right off the bat. It is mildy annoying having to check codes, though.

Glad I am not the only one that has done it at least, I am hoping this will be the one time I forget. Each box I get has 4 vials and all with the same code, not a huge deal of course. I guess I got lazy because the 10 boxes proceeding this one were all the same 22!
Thanks all, felt like **** about it all, was keeping such detailed records too...being light hearted about it all now, back on the bus.

Get a codeless glucose monitor like the assensia contour if it botheres you too much, i am using it at the moment and it has been very reliable. Been using it for 1753 tests without a single problem. ;)

Little white five-digit code chips? And the strips are individually-wrapped in foil, five to a sheet?
If so, that sounds shockingly close to my Kroger generic meter.

wow, that Accu-check Aviva, requires coding and apparently it has a "code chip" that has to be changed every box of test strips, no thanks. Get the Accu-Chek Compact Plus it has code free testing, not sure if they do that in France though, don’t see why not ;). Phone them up if you have to.

After I use the last strip in a vial. I always open up the new one and place a strip from it in the meter long enough to code it, then place the strip back in the new vial for later use.
