View Full Version : Animas IoB tables - here is how it works it out

Hello all,

Please indulge me whilst I dig up the horse that died already and try to thrash some sense into it in the vain hope it will live.

I've attached the tables for the Insulin on Board feature on the Animas 2020 (at least I've tried, not attached here before so here goes nothing...).

For those not in the know, you can tell this pump how long you think your insulin lasts for and then the pump will work out 'bolus on board' data for you which you can take into account in your future bolus deliveries. The manual claims that this is done on an analogue curve to match modern insulins. Which is delightful, but as we all have different bodies and we could be using Apidra, Humalog, Novorapid or (in some cases) something else from the animal kingdom, it would be really nice to know HOW it's working it out. In that way, you can set the number in the pump to YOUR curve and have a little bit more confidence in it getting the maths right :cool:

How did I get the data? Well, I had a loan pump for a 3 week period prior to being hooked up. I experimented with it so I'd get used to the menus etc. I decided to put in a 4 hour IoB duration and then do a 10u bolus. I then noted down how much IoB the pump had left at 15 minute intervals. It's not 100% accurate, as I used kitchen timer alarm so some of these might have been at 15 min 30 seconds etc but as a table I think it's reasonably accurate so please keep that disclaimer in mind :)

After I'd done these two settings, I was fairly confident that I'd found a curve that would match Apidra. I decided that there may be others out there as sad as me, hence doing the numbers from 3 hours through to 5. I had neither the time nor patience to do any more, and as I'm now hooked up I can't repeat the experiment in the same manner. I love the pump too much to disconnect for 5 hours and do MDI; I'm not that much into science to suffer for it...

Wow....

Firstly, you need a hobby, and doing that is not a hobby. :T

Secondly, great job and thanks for doing that. I'll make sure to bookmark this link for future references to that. Now, who wants to do the same thing with the Minimed and Cozmo?

So they don't use a "linear decay" on the insulin usage?
I wonder if their formula is published somewhere. Your "reverse engineering" works just as well, though. Nice!

I decided to take his above chart and put it into a graph with the different times. The two * that he had I just picked a number that fit in line to make the graphs curve smoothly. Hopefully a visual will help others understand how the Animas calculates IOB.

Thanks for doing that; I've not fiddled with the graphical side of things for a while so had to stay with the (less pretty) numbers.

I definately don't need another hobby! I just need to stop doing stuff like this so I can get on with the ones I already have....
