View Full Version : Yogurt?
So I've heard some people talk about eating yogurt as a healthy food.
I stopped by the yogurt section at the store tonight. Pretty much every single one of them was loaded with sugar and carbs. Of course, these were all the flavored yogurts. I didn't see any plain yogurt in the stacks.
Is there a good sugar free yogurt anywhere or do I need to just find plain unsweetened yogurt and add my own fruit, etc. for flavor?

I usually eat oatmeal in the morning, but would be interested in this as well. I check from time to time even the health food stores for low carb, and even just plain yogurt. Have not seen 1 yet that has less then at least 15g of sugar, even plain yogurt. However everyone has said that carb counting is the most important, so will have to go back and double check those. I would be interested in what you find out here though.

Dannon light and fit has only about 10 carbs per container and it's pretty good. Regular yugurt, yikes, it's about 40+ per container (not sure about the plain stuff, I like the flavored.)

I can vouch for the Dannon Fit and Light. Very good, comes in several flavors. 10g of carbs per serving, sweetened with Splenda.
If you have a Kroger grocery store in your town, look for the Kroger nonfat lite, which is comparable to the Dannon F&L and has some delicious, different flavors, especially the lemon! Also, Kroger brands a yogurt called CarbMaster that has 3g of carbs per container. Comes in vanilla, strawberry and peach. It is good.
But yeah, you've gotta watch yogurt. If I'm going to get that many carbs, I'm just going to eat Ben & Jerry's and do it up RIGHT! LOL.

I eat Breyers No Sugar Added Yogurt... I think it's got about 12 carbs and 80 calories a container. I usually eat 2 of them for breakfast, and often one later in the day as a snack. I take insulin with breakfast (often wake up with high numbers), but it also does fine (very little rise) for me when I eat it as a snack w/o insulin. I've heard that the yogurt cultures in yogurt (not sugar sweetened kind) alters how your body handles the natural milk sugars. Not sure if it's true but it's a big time and easy to handle staple for me.

try brewing your own!
i was sent a sample of kefir culture and have been brewing it as a soya based yoghurt drink which i have each morning.
mine works out as 6g carbs for a 250ml glass.
and i like to add flavours like nutmeg, cinnamon or ginger to give it a bit of pazzazz!!

Check the ingredients. Much of this so-called food isn't even yogurt. It's processed cheese. The more popular it is, the less likely it's yogurt. Here in Canada I stick with Astro, usually their "Original" Balkan.

As with most stuff in a packet, if it says 'low fat' you can fairly safely put money on it being high sugar. Taking out fat (and flavour) always means they have to put something else in its place, and that something is usually sugar.
Over here, there is a natural full fat greek yoghurt. Very calorific, but 5.9g of carbs per 100g. Absolutely wonderful stuff, but crys out for honey on top which kind of ruins the low sugar bit. But at least you know it's there...

I tried "Danon's Carb & Sugar control" yogurt. Its only 3 carbs per serving. I think the calories was around 90 (60cal + 30 fat cal).
I also liked Danon light which tasted very good and 70 cals only.

Dannon's Light & Fit line has a "carb & sugar control" variety. A four-ounce cup is 60 calories, 3 g fat, 5 g protein, and 3 g carbs. It's not the greatest yogurt in the world, but it's good enough if you're jonesing for yogurt.

I eat Silhouette Fat Free Vanilla and Source Fat Free Vanilla. They're both sweetened with splenda. I love putting strawberries or bananas or a bit of high-fibre granola in. Mmmm....
I'm not sure if they're available outside of Canada, though.

I've been eating Dannon's Light & Fit Carb/Sugar control yogurt since it came out on the market. I was never a big fan of yogurt, but it's good for a light snack.

The low fat yoghurt I buy (standard supermarket so inevitably made by a large company possibly Danone since they have a near monopoply) has 5.5 g carbs/0.1 fat per hundred grams (6.9 carbs a pot)It contains skimmed milk, dried skimmed milk, milk protein , ferments lactique(?) and vitamin D.I don't know if that makes it processed cheese but there are no stabilisers, preservatives or artificial flavourings, the ingredients don't sound unnatural.
I mix it with frozen berries for a quick easy dessert.
I thought that you were all spelling Danone wrongly so I checked, apparently in the US they do use Dannon, obviously a clever marketing ploy. Don't sound too French;)

Wow, thanks for the recommendation, I just found it at one of my local markets (Ralph's). Not bad for quick snack.
