I have been lurking on this forum for about a week, checking it out and stuff and thought I would join and introduce myself.

I was diagnosed with type 2 last weekend, but I kind of knew it was coming after talking with a few friends a head of time. What surprised me was how sick I really was when I was diagnosed. I was admitted to the hospital for a couple of days while they straightened me out and now I am just trying to learn how to deal with it on a daily basis.

Anyway, I joined this forum after searching for other diabetic forums and found this one to be pretty active and encouraging. So with that, I will say hello to you all.

Steve

Hi Steve, welcome to "the family." What meds are you currently taking for your diabetes?

The best advice I was given when first diagnosed was to test, test, test. Testing regularly is the only way you'll know how your blood sugar is doing. If you test 2 hrs after your first bite of food, you'll see which foods your blood sugar tolerates best and be able to make smarter food choices.

Many of us limit our carbs, esp potatoes, rice, bread and pasta. Also, if you're able to exercise, every little bit helps.

If you've been reading some of the posts, you'll see us often recommend the book "The First Year, Type II Diabetes, " by Gretchen Becker. Its a very worthwhile read.

Hope you post often, ask lots of questions. We're here to help.

Hello Linda, I am taking metformin twice a day, along with novalog as needed before meals and a different kind of insulin at my night time snack (I forget the name of it).

I have been very strict at eating at the same time every day, and testing before my meals. In fact I just found out yesterday I can not eat pizza like I used to :(

Excersise is on my list of things to do, and I will start it very soon, but not yet. My plan is to go for a walk in the morning for about 20 minutes or so.

I have quite smoking, been six days now. My doctor tried to talk me out of it saying I should concentrate on the diabetes first, but I figured since I was in the hospital for a couple of days I would give it a shot. It has been a lot easier trying to quit now than in the past.

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum.

Congrats on quitting smoking! Though never a smoker myself, I watched my husband struggle to quit...he's been smoke free for over 10 years now and he was amazed at how much better food tastes and how much more acute his sense of smelling is.

A good alternative to pizza is to get some of the low-carb tortillas (Walmart carries Mission Brand low-carb). Add some tomato sauce, italian seasoning, your toppings of choice and some cheese and bake in the oven until bubby...its not exactly like pizza, but does take care of that craving.

I think your idea of walking each morning is a good one. Its amazing how many extra steps you can add to your day when you think about it. I try to park further away at work or at the store, and take the steps rather than the elevator to my office. Every little bit helps. I also ride my stationary bike while watching TV...does seem like as much work that way;) .

:) Welcome, You are off to a good start for 6 days. Keep up the good work. I am type 2 for 40+ years and many of the things I used to think were absolute "no-nos" I now know I can have in moderation as long as I eliminate something else. Like I can have one piece of pizza just not a whole pizza!

Like the Pricess said walk all you can. I use a 3 wheeled walked because of balance problems but I still walk 20 minutes 2 times every day and an additional 30 minute walk 1 or 2 days a week. I am starting to swim one day a week for an hour so that is going to give me extra exercise. I also have a seated exercise video that burns lots of calories. We have to do what works for us to control the sugar and keep weight down.

Keep reading and studying about the disease and remember you have diabetes it does not have you.
