Hi,

I am new here and just wanted to say hello. I was just dx Monday with diabetes. I have Lupus and am Prednisone induced diabetic. I don't know anything about diabetes but have been shocked so far at my glucose levels. Last night 2 hrs after dinner, it was 404. I started taking 10 mg of glucotrol last night so I haven't seen any affects yet. I guess I will learn as I go. :)

Welcome.

Pred (a steroid) is one of those nasties that makes us extremely insulin resistant. It's very tough to control BGs. Best of luck!

Welcome Sugarsweet! Glad you found the forums.

Prednisone can certainly do a number on your blood sugar. I'm really surprised your doctor didn't start insulin to bring your blood sugar down more quickly.

A co-worker had steroid induced diabetes, was on insulin until a month or so after stopping the steroids, now she is on oral meds. Will you have to stay on steroids long-term because of your Lupus?

If you continue to see #s as high as you are seeing them now, I would encourage you to contact your doctor again to possibly be started on insulin. Longterm complications can occur with numbers that are staying that high.

Test your blood sugar often, find out what it is fasting, 2 hrs after your first bite of food.

Since you're on steroids, i'm not sure that eating low-carb will do that much to lower your blood sugars, but you might want to try it and see if you get lower #s. Watch the potatoes, rice, pasta, bread.

Also, drink lots of water.

Glad you found the forums!

Thanks so much for the replies. I am a little worried about his not putting me on insulin. He is just my general doctor so I have asked for a referral to an endocrinologist. I think I am gonna need one with my predisone. I am trying to eat low carb but it sure didn't work today.

It looks like I will be on Prednisone long term.

You may ask the doctor about one of the meds that helps your body use the insulin it produces. I am on Avandia for that purpose. We can be insulin resistant. If the pancreas is still producing and we add insulin it can be too much and damage other parts of the endocrine system.

Be sure to get exercise even if just walking 20/30 minutes a day. Drink water and eat veggies and small servings of lean meats. Most of all stay in close contact with your doctors office so they can track all that is happening. Journal your food, beverages, activites, stresses and anything else you think of to ask them.

Been there done that. You have Diabetes it does not have you!:) :) :) :)

Welcome to the forum, Sugarsweet.

I have a friend (diabetic) who is on Prednisone for her Lupus, but she's also taking a fast acting insulin before meals. You may want to set up an appointment with an endo and let him/her decide which is the best course of action for you.

Have you made an appt with a dietitian yet? Your dr's office may have done this for you or have set you up with a group of diabetic educators. They can actually help you with specifics for you. Above all do not be afraid to ask questions. The doctors can not help if you do not ask.:)

I called my dr. yesterday and had them refer me to and endo. I go to see him May 12th. Until then, I will just watch what I eat and do my best to keep my bg as low as possible. I haven't seen a dietician yet. My mom is diabetic also and she helps me out alot.

Thanks everybody!
