So i had thai food today (abt 1 1/2 cup rice and green curry --yumm). and i got home, put baby to bed and worked out for 30 minutes on Tony Little's Gazelle. I was a little shaky right after so i checked my sugar, It was 123, is it normal? I have no idea, do you? if so then please tell me. There was about 1 1/2 hr gap between lunch and working out.
Thanks
(For the record I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and now i am prediabetic.)

123 you should not feel shaky at all. I like to be below 100 after a workout. I went out today for a 35 mile bike ride. At 1 hour I was at 125 and felt fine. I checked 45 minutes later and was at 85. Finished the ride 15 minutes later and checked 15 minutes after being home and was at 73. I felt fine throughout the whole ride. I am a type 1 and on a pump but that should not make a difference on when you are shaky. 123 is actually a good BG to be at when working out.

That hypo symptom could also have been caused by a sudden drop in blood glucose. The rate of change is just as important as the absolute blood glucose level, as far as hypo symptoms are concerned. Exercise improves insulin sensitivity and can cause blood glucose to drop very quickly. Especially as you have insulin resistance, and because you had a carby meal 90 minutes earlier. Did you test your blood glucose before the workout?

I know that my blood sugar can vary greatly during and after workouts, with many variables affecting things. As a pre-D, it may be more informative for you to focus simply on your 2 hour after meal readings and your morning fasting.
If I eat nothing with low blood sugar and I exercise with weights, my blood sugar can rise significantly (beyond 150). If I eat before exercising and do slower cardio I can make myself hypoglycemic. Go figure.

I've recently been diagnosed with T2 (3 weeks), and am still getting the levels down from 17.9 to 8.9 (today). But I did my normal exercise regime (30 mins Interval aerobic) yesterday and went from an after breakfast level of 13.4 to an after gym level of 2.7. I felt fine, but had a biscuit just in case. 2 hrs later, after a wm sandwhich is was back up at 12+. Weird or what?
(I'm taking 500mg Metformin twice a day)

I think everyone reacts a little differently--but I know that, while cardio (I ride a stationary bike or use a treadmill) will take my BG down, the effect is only temporary. (I typically exercise after dinner, and before my body has processed everything. After I stop exercising, my BG will go back up, with the amount of the rise dependent upon what I ate, how long before, etc.)

What Blue Sky says is exactly right.
123 rising and you need insulin
123 steady, you feel great
123 falling and you can feel like c**p
Just takes getting used to how your bod reacts. Don't give up the exercise!

hi bmum
As an old hand (9 weeks after diagnosis) I noticed your numbers were similar to mine except for that 2.9! My lowest was a 4.0 and I immediately retested, it was 6.0. Sometimes you may have something on your hand that throws the meter off. In my case I think it was still a bit wet after washing. My guess is with a 2.9 you would feel shaky after having such high numbers.

Sounds like your liver may have dump some glucose into your bloodstream because of the low (started before the carbs from the biscuit hit your system) then the biscuit & sandwich added more carbs, driving the # back up to 12+. You might want to try testing *during* your workout to catch it before it goes that low again.

Hi 2sweetforme!
I have to ask an important question -- you noted that you did about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise and then felt shaky. How often were you exercising before this incident? If not often the exercise itself can cause those shaky feelings and it may not have anything to do with your BG levels.
Another factor is that aerobic exercise on indoor equipment can, for some people, result in a certain feeling of being shaky or dizzy.
I've had to learn the difference between drops in BG levels as opposed to just being tired from a lot of exercise -- the problem is that they feel pretty much the same, only the underlying conditions are different.
Bottom Line: If you are new to an exercise regemen note that your entire body has to adapt to that exercise. It's a lot more than just you BG levels at work. The good news is that sustained regular and moderately intense exercise can roll-back the syptoms of diabetes.

I had a similar effect the other day. I checked my BG prior to exercise and it was a nice 92. Right after exercise, I checked again and it had risen to 126 without my eating or drinking a thing. Sort of confused me since I was under the impression that exercise was supposed to bring down sugars, not rev them up. Thought maybe I was still early enough into the pre-D period that my body was hitting "waves" where it wasn't do its job well enough (higher BG's) and "waves" where it was doing its job right (sugars in the 80's).

I think you may have a point about something on my hand! Today I tested and got 0.7! I retested on another finger (and new strip) and got 7.1. Which is more what I expected.
Re regualr exercise - I'm already a regular exerciser, so didn't expect it to make a lot of difference. I am planning to go more often though.
Thanks for all the feedback - it's really helpful.

Weight lifting makes my BG go up 20 mg/dl or so, but cardio exercise doesn't change it much unless it's very strenuous where my heart rate gets up to 90% of max for my age.
