This is my first post. I have a question about my diet. I have gone to a nutritionalist and she recomended this diet for me. I have followed it fairly well. Typical breakfast is half cup of Oatmeal with walnuts and berries and some flax seed. Mid morning snack some walnuts and fruit or carrots and hummus. Lunch is usually bean soup and a slice of whole grain bread. Afternoon snack a protein shake. Dinner is usually a plate with 1/4 protein, 1/4 starch and 1/2 vegetable. No food after 7pm and bedtime by 10pm to give the liver a rest. I take a multivitamin along with Coq10 240 mg and a tablespoon of fish oil and a half tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil. I feel good when I follow this diet exactly, but if I eat lets say a pizza for dinner, my body rebels and I feel bloated a tired.

Do you think this type of diet is good for my diabetes? My FBG is between 125-145. I take no diabetes meds at present. My most recent A1C was 6.5. I do take hyzaar 100/50 and crestor 20.

Here what I eat and it has brought my bg level down 100 points in a month. They are starting to go up a little becuase of passover but I am below 120 in the mornings which is important to start out the day on a low note.

There are several diets you can follow south-beach, Atkins, sugar-busters, etc, etc,

none of these diets are totally correct.

To determine carbs subtract fiber from the total carbs. You can also subtract artificial sweeteners.

portion control is a must and do not get seconds

foods you can eat:

Meat = Beef well trimmed, chicken, fish broiled or baked, eggs

Nuts - most nuts are low in carbs, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, any that have total carbs of less then 10g

spreads buy no sugar added jelly or try one of several reduced sugar brands , no sugar added Peanut butter

vegetables = almost anything but corn If you eat corn stick
with the small kernel corn on the cob.

Sugar free ice cream, sugar free jell-o

Chocolate that has a cocoa % >= 60% or low carb chocolate

Breads = whole grain or low carb whole grain.

Pasta = whole grain : Dreamfields, Wal-Mart has good brand

rice = brown rice

sodas = diet only

alcohol = Low carb beer, brands like Mich ultra, miller-lite, there is at two others. Red wine or wine that is at least 13% alcohol
Lots of tequila:D

avoid high carb food any anything with a lot of refined sugar

Fruit = try different ones to see how they effect your BS

If you have acid reflux avoid eating fruit at meal time.

general rule if its brown then its OK for diabetes

Hi Jeff & Welcome

No two diabetics are alike. What works for one person may not necessarily work for the next. Many members here follow somewhat of a low-carb diet, test often, and get in some type of exercise, like walking.

Welcome, Jeff! Glad you found us. I do follow a lower-carb diet, focusing on eating lots of veggies and lean meats, although a few higher carb things, like potatoes, don't bother me in particular too much. That's the weird thing. Foods that are known to spike the blood sugar do that reliably in some people, but don't affect others very much. I have to watch rice, which bugs me since I love it.

Anyway, as Karen said, do work some exercise into your plan. I walk. I hate it, but I do it. Start with whatever you can do, even if it's just 10 minutes. Add five minutes a week and work up to about 30 minutes most days of the week.

Take care, test often and keep us posted on how you're doing! :)

Welcome Jeff,

Diet is probably closer to great. I'd add some variety though.

6.5% is about where they'll want you to go on meds. Is your weight under control? Are you exercising regularly? No need to answer.

Hello, I am new to all this and trying to figure out how to read the food labels. Given this label
Total Carbs 9g
Dietary Fiber 1g

Based on what you said the carbs per portion would be 8g?

I agree with John (this seems to happen a lot). It's certainly a good start but variety is important for at least two reasons: 1) to keep food interesting enough that you can live with it for many years. 2) To make sure you get a full spectrum on nutrients.

Unless you come from Europe (which you don't), where I understand that the Total carbs on the label has already had the Fibre subtracted. :)

Welcome, Jeff. It's nice to have another Marylander join the forum. As far as I know, there's only the 2 of us. You are about an hour's drive from me. It's important to test often to determine how certain foods are affecting you. Have you been doing this? That's the best way to determine how this diet works for you. As was already mentioned, food affects everyone differently, so testing is the only sure way of knowing what's going to work.

I don't test much. Twice a day fasting and before lunch. Lately I have been tired all the time. I need to start a walking program to give me more energy. To tell you the truth it just feels great to lay on the sofa and watch TV. Its a hard habit to break.

Yeah, I've been in salad and broccoli rebellion the past few days. LOL. I wish more places served squash.

Gleny, give that Met time to work. It takes about three weeks to reach full effectiveness. I know I prowled the house like a hungry panther the first week I was diagnosed. However, once the Met kicked in, it got better. Get some dark chocolate with at leat 60 percent cocoa. Eat a square. It won't spike your BG. The world always looks a little better with chocolate in your tummy. :)

Welcome Sprzepiora! This whole thing does take some getting used to, for sure. Keep at it and the work will pay off, I promise!
