My name is Dawn I am 25 years old, I live in Southern California and I was diagnose a type 2 diabetic several years ago, yet I am still in denial.
I am glad I found this forum.
Well, I am on insulin because I choose to be..I did not have to take insulin, also I am taking oral meds, such as, glucovance and avandia and 2 other meds.

Hello Dawn, and welcome to our wonderful group! As I'm sure you can tell by the warm welcome you've recieved, everyone here is very friendly and supportive.
I think denial is a very human result of being told you have a chronic condition. I hope that we can be of some help to you in whatever capacity you may need it.
Happy posting!

Some type 2s who can't control their blood sugars well enough with just diet and exercise prefer to go straight on insulin, rather than taking oral medications. Their reasoning is that all the oral meds have possible side effects and that insulin in a more natural substance to be introducing into their bodies. Another reason is that certain of the oral meds (the sullfonylureas) stimulate the beta cells of the pancreas to produce greater amounts of insulin, eventually causing the beta cells to burn out and making injected insulin a necessity. By going on insulin early on, these people hope to avoid destruction of the beta cells and preserve the body's ability to produce some insulin of its own. This could be important in the future, as much of the ongoing research into possible "cures" for diabetes involves methods of reproducing beta cells within the pancreas and could only be successful in diabetics who still have some functioning beta cells of their own.
