Assuming the small number of respondents (79 so far) is representative of all DF members... it's interesting to see how far away we are from the 80%+ type 2's prevalent in society as a whole

From my experience with other T2s (both in my family and at work...I know probably 25 of them), the majority of those I know personally don't find the idea of having "diabetes" a big deal, it doesn't affect their lives much at all...so they would NEVER think of posting to a forum such as this....most don't even test their blood sugars monthly and feel free to eat all they want, whenever they want. I'm known to them as the "obsessive" one.:o I've learned to keep quite and take care of myself....I only share information with forum members who request advice.

In that case Linda, keep on being obsessive... maybe we all need a bit more OCD when it comes to taking care of ourselves :)

Yeah.. that's really weird.. I actually work with a Type 2 and I asked him how his BS had been lately and he said he didn't even know, and he didn't even know where his meter was.. it was like he didn't even care.. I was totally perplexed by how he's not taking it seriously... oh well, to each his own

Sad to see there is so much head-in-the-sand or "floating down that river in Egypt" going on around us :(

Folks like this give all us T2's a bad name! I think if these folks ever saw first-hand the complications that can occur from longterm non-compliance, they'd find that meter and use it!

I have seen a gangrenous foot, seen how an amputee does in the post op period, watched someone become legally blind and then die of renal failure in their mid-50's due to diabetes neglect...how could you see something like that and not take care of your own diabetes?...

Maybe there should be a class or video showing various complications would help drive home the fact that T2 is a serious disease, requiring proper management. Instead, we are handed a meter, told to test once a day, take a pill and recheck in 3-6 months. Is it any wonder some don't take it seriously?

Yeah, but even so, and everyone here has done this obviously, if you're diagnosed with a DISEASE, no matter how the dr. may have played it down, wouldn't one try to do as much research as they can about it?... I don't get it..

Obviously I'm preaching to the choir here since it was all our drive to learn as much as possible about diabetes that eventually led us to this forum in the first place.

Why is there no option for Type 3? Or None/Support.
Not everyone on this forum has the D - some are on here for support for friends or family with it.

The Type 3s in my life are my support system and could not do it with out some of them sometimes ;)

Type 2
Dx'd Dec 07
Not counting those from my D education program,I only know 9 with this disease & all are T2. 3 take it seriously with diet & exercise, 3 take pills & have A1c's taken ea 3 months, 3 eat high carb meals & no exercise, just rely on meds to keep them going.
I guess we make the decisions that we are comfortable with

I think that's why if you're on insulin you've got the "bad" kind, or you must be a "brittle" diabetic.... tsk tsk.

I think one of the biggest problems is diabetes support system tends to suck, at least in the USA. Our doctors are more concerned with their golf scores then they are with their patients. Not to mention the "you did it to yourself" crowd I for one get mad as H@#$ when someone uses that line with me. Another problem is people are afraid to admit they have diabetes for fear of losing their job.

Oh yea type 2 diagnosed June 2004 and I didn't get diabetes because I was fat I started gaining weight when my BG became impaired which I believe was Triggered by Prevacid.
