I have just found this site. I was Dx with type 2 diabetes about 5 years ago, Had all the systems but wouldnt believe It was diabetes. No Family history nobody in my family with diabetes. So the wife finnally convinced me to got out to the ambulance service to check my blood sugar and guess what, it was 900. and the kicker is I am a Paramedic.
So I am here to learn more about living with diabetes,I have a hard time eating right while I am on shift for 24 hours.

June 9th 2004 several weeks after finding out my wife was having twins I went to the hospital with servere case of kidney stones. For some reason they checked my Bg levels and out it was over 500. Spent three days in the hospital. Well welcome to the DF It is a great to go when you have Diabetes

Hard yes, but think how much harder it will be to live with the consequences of not eating right. Welcome to the forum, I hope we can talk you through the hard parts.

I was type 1 for 6 months ignoring those symptoms (how do you ignore getting up to pee 5 times per night?) because I didn't want to believe.

Lots of info here. And lots of questions too. :D

Weight, exercise, A1c, meds, diet and attitude are all issues. Tell us about how they affect you!

Welcome xtrememedic! Glad you found the forums.

I'm sure with your shift work, eating right will be somewhat challenging, but you can do it. You'll have to keep your work area stocked with protein shakes, cheese, nuts, salads, and s/f puddings and jellos....things that are quick and portable.

I've worked in the medical field for years, plus had a strong history of T2 in my family....yet I was still surprised when diagnosed. We just never expect anything to happen to ourselves.

Though you do have a medical background, diabetes is something you're probably that familiar with as far as day-to-day managementis concerned. There's a great book "The First Year, Type II Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker that I found very useful and informative. She's T2 herself and writes about all aspects of the first year of diabetes. A VERY worthwhile read.
