Hi all, I am a type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed a year ago. I am having problems with foods that stay within my amount of carbs that taste good-I am pretty fussy. I am allowed 0-1 per snack and 1-5 carbs per meal. That makes eating tricky or it sure seems that way to me. I really am struggling lately and even on insulin my numbers don't look too good especially lately.

I moved your post suemako to introductions. I felt it would be seen here and not buried in another thread.

Let me (hopefully) be the first to welcome you to Diabetes Forums.

If you are a type one, you should be able to match your insulin to your food. Counting carbs can be beneficial for weight loss, but your meal bolus should cover any food that you eat. Can you tell us about your treatment?

Welcome Sue.

We've all been through this. Some of us many times.

I am allowed 0-1 per snack and 1-5 carbs per meal.

1-5 carbs per meal? Are you talking grams or exchanges? We all talk grams and so should you.

What insulin(s) are you taking and when?

-----------------------------

My first recommendation is to dump the word "allowed" You decide what's allowed. Actually I use my meter to tell me what I can and cannot eat. I don't listen to dieticians anymore. Like many here, I think they can do as much harm as good.

Welcome to the forums :)

You really should give carb counting a try, and match your insulin to what you eat instead of the other way around... Takes some trial and error and MANY tests before getting it right with insulin doses etc, but once you've gotten the knack of it, it will become 2nd nature :)

I can eat basically whatever i want, in reasonable amounts :T

Feel free to ask around in the forums and again, Welcome :)

Hi Sue and welcome! We are all here to help one another :D

I think you mean 1-5 servings? It is suggested by Dietitians that an average woman eat between 3-4 servings per meal. One serving = 15grams. So 3-5 servings mean 45g-60g of carbs. That's quite of bit of food you can enjoy, per meal! There is a great book called Calorie King. It shows you the carb/fat/calories in foods, its extremly useful, I think you will like it! :T

There is absolutly no restrictions on food, all you have to make sure is that you know your insulin carb ratio and your good to go! :)

dIETITIANS are there to guide not to rule. Sometimes mine is helpful and sometimes I give her information that she uses when talking to other diabetics.

I agree with above are you saying servings/choices? That is a big differance 1 choice is 15 grams.

Keep reading and studing your numbers. Do you use a pump?
