After 30 minutes on the phone with the insurance company, 20 of it on hold (heh.), I found out a very good thing!

My insurance will cover 300 strips a month and a new meter every year! I couldn't believe it! I can also get strips and lancets with one co-pay! I use about 150 or so strips a month, so that would be great for me. It also means I can upgrade my meter if I want to. I'm thinking about the Accu-chek Aviva. Lots of folks on the DF have expressed their satisfaction with it.

You want a free meter? Call the meter company directly and they will send you one free without going through your insurance (and charging them the full price). It works 9 out of 10 times.

Congrats on the strip allowance. It's nice to know you have a buffer there if needed.

I noticed you are from Alabama. Is this Blue Cross or State Employees? I have State Employees administered by BCBS of Alabama and they told me the same thing.

Patricia, it's Blue Cross, but not the state employees' variety. Not PEEHIP, in other words. Group insurance with my employer. I was SO relieved!

Thanks for reminding me about the free meter, Jedi. I'll call the Accu-Chek people tomorrow!

Three hundred strips per month. Wow. My normal usage would be covered.

Thanks for sharing. :)

They told me at my endo's office today they couldn't believe the insurance company was covering that many for someone not on insulin, but I told the rep I spoke with that I'm not on insulin, and those were the numbers she quoted me, even after I said "300?" in disbelief. I hope that's the case. I won't use that many in a month, but it's nice to know I can.
