I found this forum by Googling insulin and fluid retention. I am suddenly experiencing fat ankles, and I don't like it! My ankles were always one of my best features!
I am an 18 year Type II, six months on insulin: Levemir and NovoRapid. I have been (under supervision) increasing my doseages, so that as of now I am taking 70 units of Levemir at night and 30 of NR before meals. At those levels, I am getting fluid retention. Does fluid retention increase with increased doses of insulin, or am I imagining things?
My name is Cara, and I live in Atlantic Canada (I am an American who married a Canadian) with my professor husband, two Jack Russell Terriers, and a Maine Coon Cat who runs the place. Delighted to "meet" all of you! :)

Welcome to the club Cara.
Never heard of insulin causing fluid retention but I suppose it's possible. Maybe others can shed some light.

Hello Caraschotch and welcome to DF. I too cannot answer your question on fluid retaination. Sorry Cara. ;)

Cara, I am quite heavy @ 100Kg+ and my doses are big like I take 60U of Lantus and 44U at night and 30U of rapid before I eat but no fluid retianation however there is some correlation to how much you weigh and how much insulin you take.
Also that being a type 2 has the ability to insulin resistance as I too may have this problem being this heavy. :(

Welcome to Diabetes Forums Cara. If you are experiencing fluid retention, it is time to visit your doctor. Fluid in your ankles can be an indicator of a bigger problems, it can also be nothing more than the need to exercise more.
You do not want to start exercising until your doctor rules out congestive heart problems or kidney problems.
Your doctor my prescribe lasix to remove the excess fluid. Hydrocholorathiazide is also a drug that is prescribed by doctors for high blood pressure. It is a simple diuretic that will remove the excess fluid from your body. Please call your doctor and make an appointment.
I am also a dog lover. I have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that are my best buddies.

Welcome neighbour! :D
What's your exercise program like? Can I assume you have weight to lose?

Thanks so much, Nancy! I have recently completed a medical check-up that even included a stress MIBI. My heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and eyes are fine, and my blood pressure is great. I am, however, waaaaay too fat. I'm always hoping that's not the problem! LOL ---Cara

Well you certainly may! I just never had fat ankles before the heat of summer set in. I guess I need to walk more. My exercise program is sporadic and not very effective.
Thanks!

We all have to make time for it. 30 minutes a day walking is our minimum target. You may not be able to do that yet, but you can work up to it.
Have a peek at Mendosa's site. He has lots of great stuff.

Oh you won't be sorry Cara. They are the most wonderful breed of dogs. They are playful, snugglers and definitely game for anything. About the only issue I have is the long fur. They are prone to getting weeds and stickers stuck in the beautiful long fur. This makes it tough if you want to hike with them.
I will always have a cavalier in my life.

Hi again Cara, if you have excess fluid in your ankles i would suggest possibly raising your ankles above your knees whenever you are sitting down, this will cause whatever fluid you have to drain, it can be uncomfortable ( i have water on the knee in both knees and have had for years) but it does help.
