Hi. My A1C went from 5.7 to 6.7 in 3 months. The endo increased my Janumet from once to twice daily. Now my morning BGs have gone UP. I'm in the high 140s. This morning 161. I tried the protein snack before bed and it didn't work. After dinner BGs vary but can be as high as 200+. Even 4 hours after dinner.

I was diagnosed diabetic because they finally figured out that the tingling and numbness in my feet was neuropathy. This year I had diabetic cataracts removed from both eyes. I'm 52 years old and wondering where all this is going. I stick to the carb program and am not overweight.

Does anyone think Lantus might help? I'd like to stop taking Januvia since I read Lottadata's web site. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated since I go back to the doctor on Tuesday.

Yup. I'd ask about going full MDI too. There's a good chance you'll just continue to keep sliding. With MDI you can taylor your doses to your needs as they change. It'll probably make your doctor shudder, and of course it does carry more risk. But I have seen a lot of cases of stepped progression on here.

I'd also ask about full testing. Perhaps you are a 1.5 where you don't fit the typical type 2 mold.

Discuss fully with doc.

John,
Forgive my ignorance. What is MDI?

Hi Jazzbo, I can't remember if I welcomed you or not, but if I didn't, WELCOME! :) Considering you are not overweight, I do not understand why you weren't on MDI (multible Daily Injections)from the beginning. I have been on MDI for quite awhile now, and still cannot get my fasting numbers down. MY A1C's aren't bad and I do real good for all my other readings. If I get up and test between 4 and 5 am, I have great fasting numbers. I have also tried all the snack stuff, nothing works. I test before breakfast now, so I know how much Novolog to take, and do not worry about the fasting number, unless I am up early. I think you should talk to your doctor about the MDI.

I had a similar problem. When I took Januvia my BS went up. Eventually went on Lantus (32 units per night) and my BS was almost under control, but mornings were still high and I also experienced a few lows. Dr. added Janumet (twice a day) to the Lantus and BS is consistantly between 85-120 and no more lows. Worked great for me. Just a suggestion. Had no other problems with the Janumet.

John,

Multiple Daily Injections... typically this consists of a long-acting insulin (often Lantus these days) given once or twice a day to cover your basal or background needs, and then a bolus of fast-acting insulin with each meal/snack to cover the carbs you are eating. Don't be scared of insulin... the needles are so fine these days that most times you barely even feel them... much less than the finger-sticks anyway. I'm type 2 but started on MDI within my first year and then shortly thereafter I chose to go onto a pump. MDI or pump gives you much more control than you can get with pills.
