Hello. I'm new to this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I was diagnosed 1 year ago with type 2. First A1c was 13.4 on May 3, 2007. I'm 50 and staying at home these days.
I've completely changed the way we (hubby and I) eat. He has high cholesterol but no other health problems. We now eat 5 to 7 veggies a day, whole grains, lean meats, fish and very few processed foods. Since last year I've lost 30 lbs, not as much as I would like but working harder on getting more exercise.
I know that I can learn to better manage my D with your help.
Last testing in January was 6.3.
Meds are 500 Metformin and 1 Amaryl

To go from 13.4 to 6.3 is amazing! Just shows you that once under control, diabetes can actually help us be healthier by eating the right foods and doing some exercise. Congratulations on losing the extra weight, too.
All in all, you must feel so much better than you did last year at this time!
Keep up the great work!

So what have you been doing for exercise and what's next?

Hi everyone. Exercise is usually 30 minute brisk walk on the boardwalk. Also working in the garden for 1 hour each day.
Last year at this time I felt awful... sleeping 16 hours a day. Now I can't even take a nap. Life sure is better.

Weigh to go! Congratulations glad hubby is working with you on the food. Sometimes they do not want to and that makes it more difficult. So welcome to both of you. :o
I'm 63 and still working so do not think only young folks hang here.

I'm trying to find out what "normal" levels are for diabetics. My levels have been bouncing around lately. Used to be under 115 in the am now are around 125-130. By 10 am BG is down to 70-80. Am I worrying too much or should I go back to DR to get more meds. What do you think?

I think you are doing great. Damage is typically pegged at bs over 140 & you are under that most of the time it seems so that's really good. I'd keep testing and paying attention to diet for a bit & see if you continue to drift higher before getting more "stuff".
IMHO, the fewer meds, the better but no less than what you need.
Glad you found us CookD.

Welcome to DF. Great work on your weight. I'm trying hard to loose weight too.. I've lost about 15 lb in 2 months. I'm trying to loose it gradually and also want to keep it off for a long time. I'm 32 and diagosed 2 months back. I'm under good control currently but trying to get off the meds and see if I can manage my D with diet and exercise alone. Lets see :)
Again, welcome to DF and looking forward to hear from you on your progress/questions etc
:) :D

It's great to feel well again even though we have D.
This time last year , I too felt awful and was taking morning & afternoon naps, plus sleeping 10hrs each night.

What do you think? If your bg numbers are up in the morning you try several different things; eat nuts before you go to bed not a whole can just small handful, you can try a glass of dry wine or low carb beer about a hour before bed. Sleep less the longer you sleep the greater the amount of glucose your liver will put out. My most important rule is never go to sleep with a low bg that almost guarantee a morning high.
Welcome and well done!!
Staying home?? Think about getting a dog. Great way to get exercise.
Normal??? It doesn't exist. Do what works for YOU.
