I'm new to this forum and although I was dx'd almost 12 years ago I am still learning new things. I have an appt. with my endo next week and want to check some things out with her. Although I have lost over 50 lbs. it has done little to help with my bs control and so the doc started me on Lantus last month. I've worked my way up to 22 units at night and that seems to work for my morning numbers. I have been testing before meals and after meals and the numbers before are decent ...always under 120 mostly under 110. But unless I eat virtually no carbs the 2 hour post is 40 to 60 points higher. And don't even ask me what a mug of homemade split pea soup can do. So is this going to be where she says "Humalog?" And is this where I learn what carb counting is? Until this forum I had never hear of this. The other forum I'm on all they talk about is not eating anything white but cauliflower to avoid insulin at all costs. I have a feeling my pancreas has retired and go to Barbados and I need a little more help. I feel that I am missing a lot of nutrition by cutting out almost all carbs. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Thanks!

I think you've hit the nail on the head. There's no need to torture yourself.
PM me with the name of that forum and I'll go there and bash a few heads! http://www.msnsmiley.hu/emoticons/images/4741.gif

I'm not on insulin, but there are worse things than having to take it. I count carbs NOW! IMHO, every person with D needs to know how to do it, regardless of type. You just can't control it, otherwise. Of course, with insulin, you have to be more exact about the amount, but it helps to have a general idea to start with.
Some carbs are necessary for energy and well-being. If Humalog or another rapid action insulin is what you need, take it and eat healthfully and happily!
Good luck with your endo appointment.

I was where you are a few months ago; pills weren't getting the job done, my doc added lantus, that wasn't enough either, and now I am on novolog as well. I have to say it is much easier than I thought it would be and eating a balanced diet has become manageable. For me, insulin has been the key to getting my BG under control; if my next A1c agrees with my meter averages I think I will be quite happy, my last A1c was something like 8.9 and I am hoping my next will be in the mid 6 range (I could do better but it's a start!) I go in next Monday for a blood draw.

In that case you need to inject insulin before meals as well. But you need to manage insulin resistance too. It means that you need to find a balance between the the insulin you inject and the carbs you eat. Eating too much carb and covering it with lots of insulin makes insulin resistance worse. And don't forget to get lots of exercise! ;)

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the support. I think the biggest resistance to insulin is the thought of jabbing ourselves with the needles. I was on Byetta for a very short period (couldn't tolerate it and it did nothing for my bg) but I did get passed the needle thing...at least the short ones in the pens. Not sure how I would handle the syringe.
So in carb counting, I take it you figure out ahead of the meal how many grams of carb you are going to partake of and then administer the correct amount of insulin to counteract the effect it will have on you bg? I have kept a log this past month of my before and after testing as well as a food diary so she can see what's going on. I'm still working on the weight loss also, so all of this tracking has actually been helpful. I have heard that Lantu can be a factor in weight gain so I am trying to be really careful with what goes into my mouth so I can continue to take this weight off. I am on metformin also so I think that is helping.
I am just amazed at how much more I have learned about this pesky little disease in the last few days on this forum! God bless the internet.:)
