I dont mean the wendys jr one either, who has had a normal milkshake? I am dying to have a milkshake but have no idea what do bolus. I have a bad feeling it would be like 100 carbs. Who has had one? What did you do?

I've had lots in the last 18 years.

I know that at Dairy Queen I had a medium chocolate malt that was something like 180 carbs. Since you're on a pump, I'll let you know what I did...

I used my regular ratio for that time of the day, which was like 1:12 at the time (now it's like 1:28 since starting to lose weight). I set the bolus amount and did a dual wave for 25% up front and the rest over 2.5 hours. I drink them slowly, if you don't then maybe only 1.5 hours...?

I do the same for regular milkshakes. They're less carbs without the malt in them...

ME! I am known to have at least TWO milkshakes a month! Treat yourself, conservatively, bolus, ENJOY!

Determine your insulin to carb ratio, determine the number of carbs, there are MANY excellent sources available on the net and in printed books containing carb info per food type, bolus accordingly.

Remember, as a diabetic, with proper information and medication in concert, there is NOTHING you cant eat unless you have an allergy to it. Eat smart, treat yourself to fun foods in moderation and you can enjoy the best in foods that life has to offer. Be not dismayed, homework! Homework! Homework! FEAST!

True that there are LESS carbs w/o the malt, BUT, the malt is soooo Mmmmm Mmmmmmmmm GOOD!

i have never had so much as a sip of a milkshake since my Dad had me try a sip when i was about 5 years old (1960).

i must have been such a disappointment to him - but i got the "anti-milk" gene from my Mother.

so, not being able to have a milkshake after diagnosis is no biggie!

I haven't had one, but have had a small sip of an Oreo Milkshake, which was lovely. Had a mad craving yesterday for Hagen Daas Cookies & Cream ice cream, but managed to resist.

just bolus for the carbs as normal, it's like 5g carbs per 100ml i think for semi skimmed...

Ask the resturant or whatever to check the carton for you and tell you how many carbs per measure and then how much is in the cup.

If you have a Steak n Shake near you (or similar restaurant) ask for a "child's" size milkshake...order inside and you'll get a nifty glass (not paper or styrofoam...yucky with milkshakes) and it's a much smaller portion.

Plus, they really blend the shakes...not just dispensed.

I've just "heard" this, of course!

But yes, just bolus for the carbs. Most restaurant have this info readily available for you.

I make them at home...measure the milk, measure the ice cream, measure the chocolate syrup, add up the carbs, shoot up and let her rip...bg handles it better if I have if after a regular meal, though.

I've been having them whenever I wanted for years. Usually I have a half or a fourth of someone's. When I was younger, I would have a whole one for dinner on a hot day. Mmmm-mmm.

I make them myself for my family in the summertime. They eat what I eat. No sugar ice cream, skim milk, splenda & vanilla. Malt if I had it--all in the blender.

I don't have milkshakes often, but have had them since diagnosis. Milk and ice cream in general drive my blood sugar up fast and hard. I figure about 15 carbs a cup (like ice cream) and usually that works for me. I do a dual wave and give a very small portion of the extended bolus over two hours.

So no fruits, crackers, chips, etc..? It all ends up sugar.

As for milkshakes, the only ones I don't think twice about passing up are the Shamrock Shakes at McDonalds in March... They will mix it with chocolate if you ask em too, soooooooo good!!! But wayyyyy high on the carbs!

I don't recommend making milkshakes a staple of your diet, but I've had quite a few. I find the cold temps seem to help negate any potential spike in blood sugar, and as long as I have a good idea about the carb content, my two and four hour readings are generally good.

Yep, hands up here. I have them a lot at the moment.
Ummmmmmmmmmmm the babies want them. That is my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Nancy, what ice cream are you eating that is 15 carbs per cup? All I see is about 15 carbs per half cup. I could eat twice the amount of ice cream I normally do with your type.:D

I have never had a real milkshake with high sugar ice cream so one made with Breyer's low carb ice cream tastes great to me. One-half cup of Carb Smart has 10 carbs. I use one cup and some whole milk. I let the ice cream get a little soft so I can just stir it all together with a spoon. I make sure the milk is very cold. The whole thing has about 25 carbs. I have read that whole milk is less likely than skim milk to make you spike. It is not a big shake but it satisfies my taste for one. In the summer time i use Breyer's vanilla and mix in soft fresh peaches or presweetned berries, in which case I don't use any milk. The juice in the fruit thins the mixture enough that I can stir without adding milk.

Different strokes for different folks. LOL!

so you guys really just give 10 units? That is what I would do if I had to, but it seems like suicide. Can my body handle 10 units for a drink? Would I pass out.........or explode?

also what is a malt? Are the micky dees milkshake malts?
and how do you guys know how much is a cup? I never cook so i have no clue how much a cup is.

Remember you don't have to finish the "whole" milkshake! I usually get the chills about half way through anyway...

No milkshakes, but last night my fiance and I went out for a little after-dinner "date" for dessert and coffee and I had chocolate rasberry cheesecake; a whole slice... it was heaven. I just figured the approximate carbs and bolused accordingly and I was fine. Not something I'd do often; but for a special treat once in a great while, what the heck...;) ;)
