Has anyone had Lasik after diagnosis? Is it safe for people wit diabetes?
I asked my endo and she said I would need to see the optho- I have an appointment next month.
Just wanted to see if anyone had any first hand experience.

I talked to my optho, and he gave me the all clear if I wanted to get it done. My brain is a little fuzzy now, but there is something they check/measure, then tell you if you are a good candidate. The surgeries keep getting better all the time and I'm just still waiting . . . . I spent so much money on my last pair of glasses, that I could have paid for half of the surgery - geez.

You might find this thread (http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/eyes/27728-lasik-before-my-dx.html) an interesting read.
There was also a recent news story which shed a negative light on Lasik: Lasik patients air grievances in front of FDA panel (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080425/Lasik_inquiry_080425/20080425/)
I guess my main concern with having this after Dx is that I know that my body [even with pretty good BS control] takes longer to heal and is more prone to infection than before.

If that's what you really want, be sure to investigate the Dr. carefully and spend plenty of time picking the Right Dr. Then, go for it.
As for me, I'll take the devil I know over one who might make things worse or so different it'll take me months/years to learn how things work.

I had lasik back in 1999. I was having blood vessels growing in my corneas from wearing the contacts too much. My vision was -6.25 in each eye which meant about 20/600 vision. My vision was 20/20 in the right eye and 20/30 in the left eye and I love being able to see in the morning to go to the bathroom etc. But my left eye has gotten blurry in the past few years, especially in the past year. I don't know if it is surgery related but I am continuing to see what the drs say. My diabetes tests have not shown diabetes with an A1C of 5.8 and a bgs of 99 so that theory is knocked down. If you don't have as bad of myopia you may be a better candidate for no mess ups. I have another appointment next week and I will tell you what happens. Am I glad I had lasik..yes..but I only have one usable eye right now and the left is blurred and essentially non usable. Good luck.
