QUESTION. Perhaps I've not seen this discussed, as I'm only part way through reading all the wonderful "helps" in this forum.
I've seen Glucerna advertised on TV, and am sure there are other like products. Previously, for breakfast, I had a FIBER ONE breakfast bar and a Dr. Pepper for breakfast. I know, I know. BAD. There was a rhyme/reason for the DP, as I have acid issues, and that helps relieve it. Back to the point though......do any of you use and like the taste of any breakfast bars/drinks/snacks that can be purchased like the above mentioned name. I've never tried any of them, so don't know what is good and what is a waste of money. I am often away from the house though, and need to know some things I could reach for if needed. Much thanks for your input....

Glucerna - Snack Bars... (http://glucerna.com/product/snackbars.aspx) have around 22g of Carbs. If you think that one of these will satisfy your breakfast needs then you might be OK but personally I tend to steer clear of anything marketed specifically to those with Diabetes. No need really to spend the extra money.
I'd rather have some protein like eggs that will fill you up, and last you longer through the day. I believe that a good breakfast sets you up for the rest of the day and possibly affects how hungry and how much we eat later in the day... as in a poor breakfast could lead to overeating later in the day.

Generally I don't consider any of this food. They are food-like subtances at best and are inherently bad for you. Read In Defense of Food (http://www.michaelpollan.com/indefense.php) and watch Michael Pollan on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos on CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/thehour/video.php?id=1992)

My experiences with Carnation Instant Breakfasts has been terrible. They are very high GI foods, and I can't keep from spiking. I avoid them.
I never tried Glucerna.

I choose foods because I know they're healthy. If I find some that taste good too - well, that's just a bonus. Turns out, I enjoy almost everything I eat.
Flavor is overrated.
This morning I had a fresh orange and water for breakfast, then I went and burned over 1000 calories in 1 hour and still got to work before everyone else. For lunch I just had a nice big salad, a bowl of broccoli cheese soup, and more water. Two hours after lunch and I just tested my BG: 114. Not sure what's for dinner yet but you get the idea.
I like Dr. Pepper, DW has it everyday so it's always in the pantry. I haven't had one in many many months and don't expect to. I could. I could "get away with it". I'm more likely to get away FROM it though. Maybe next year. No regrets.

I too have not found any of the "Diabetic marketed items" that I like. If I need a grab and go breakfast item, I get the Quaker Breakfast Cookies. One with hot tea is the same number of carbs I normally have at home for b'fast. They are not as expensive as the diabetic kind and face it you do need carbs to get started in the mornings.
I do keep a granola bar in my desk drawer in case I forget my lunch so I don't have to eat out of the machines here:eek: Again I have researched the carbs and bought the brand that is nearest to my normal lunch carbs. It is best to have a variety of foods in our diets and prepackaged is not the best way to go. So try prepacking some things yourself. Like get a low sugar cereal you like and measure out a serving and pack in baggies.

I'm not a big breakfast fan myself, but I have found eggs and bacon or an omlette (or egg substitute and turkey bacon) keep me full for quite a long time. I make them the night before, put them in a plastic container and heat it up at work when I get ready to eat.
You can also try the cheese sticks that are individually wrapped. I'll have that an an apple some mornings.
I also like the S. Beach High Protein Cereal bars....15 carbs and they taste quite good.
Walmart has the EAS Carb-AdvantEDGE high-protein shakes that are 4 gms of carbs (I think....not many anways) and don't require refrigeration. They come in strawberry, chocolate fudge, french vanilla and mocha.
