Hi Guys

I started with a fasting BG of 140 this AM. Not too bad, but after having GrapeNuts and Lowfat milk, it went to 207, at the breakfast + 2 hours check. I thought this would be a good breakfast. What do you guys eat?

Cereal is hard for many of us, most is loaded with carbs. Grapenuts has 17 carbs/serving, but its easy to eat more portion wise than an average serving unless you measure it out. Then, you've got the carbs in your milk, 1 cup is usually between 12 and 14 carbs (2% or skim).

Have you tried the "Hood Calorie Countdown" milk? It has much less carbs and tastes quite good...there's chocolate as well.

Usually i'll have eggs and bacon for b/fast...or a protein shake or S. Beach high-protein cereal bar.

Nothing says you can't have non-b/fast foods for b/fast as well, try lunch meat with cheese...quick and easily portable. I have this at my desk some mornings.

Carbs in Milk

Number of Carbs
» Milk - 3.25% Milkfat - (1 cup) 11
» Milk - Low Sodium - (1 cup) 11
» Milk - Lowfat - 1% Milkfat, Protein Fortified, with Added Vitamin A, (1 cup) 14
» Milk - Nonfat - Protein Fortified, with Added Vitamin A (fat Free And Skim), (1 cup) 14
» Milk - Reduced Fat - 2% Milkfat, Protein Fortified, with Added Vitamin A, (1 cup) 14

Ugh. Breakfast is the worst meal of the day for me.

This morning I had the Glucerna cereal and had good results. The cereal isn't bad but crazy expensive!

Sometimes I'll get a breakfast sandwich (if I don't have time to prepare something for myself) and remove half the bread. I've had some luck with that.

Otherwise, I stick with eggs, turkey bacon/sausage, one piece of high fiber bread and some milk. Sometimes I'll make an omelet (using egg substitute) with some onions and mushrooms and cheese.

I'm going to try oatmeal again soon and see how I do with that.

Good luck!

Post Grape-nuts Cereal... (http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/8329.html) has 42.2g of usable Carbohydrates in 1/2 cup (Total Carbs of 47.2g - 5.9g of Fibre). 1 cup of 1% low fat milk... (http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c201C.html) has 13g Carbs. So that comes to 55.2g Carbs... please adjust for the amounts you actually had.

The most common theme I read on this forum suggests a low carbohydrate diet (around 100g -150g per day) is working well for many with D. I myself recently started with this and find I get better numbers with things like eggs for breakfast instead of cereal or toast. Protein also seems to fill me longer and so helps reduce the hunger between meals :)

My stand by is a piece of high fiber bread with a teaspoon of peanut butter. If in too much of a rush to make toast, I will grab an oatmeal breakfast cookie. They stay with me good and do not run my sugar high.

GrapeNuts are one of the more glycemic cereals out there...

Even Type 1's like myself often split their fast-acting insulins to cover the "boom" of cereals...

I lived on GrapeNuts in college...but, I walked miles everyday then...so I guess that helped...those were pre-meter days...who knew?

You could have had two KrispyKremes to equal the carbs in your "healthy" breakfast cereal...hard to imagine, isn't it? Be sure to read the nutritional label for carb content and match it up to the serving size on the same label. Chances are the serving size of the GrapeNuts in only about 1/3 cup of so...so you probably had a double whammy of carbs.

I do a South Beach bar or a container of s/f yogurt. I have seen the Glucerna cereal. $4.69 a box. Yikes! I loooove cereal but have to be very, very careful with it.

Unless I'm on a road trip, I'm not a big breakfast eater. Never have been. I know it's the most important meal of the day, but I've never been able to eat much right after I wake up. I have to be up and going for five or six hours before I feel much like eating anything.

I used to skip breakfast, but admit when I did eat, I used to eat Grapenuts (or the store variety version) too. My problem was that I would eat 2-3 portions and wonder why I spiked. Now I eat a low carb/no sugar added yogurt (or drink one of the smoothies), and have a piece of fruit (usually Granny Smith Apple). I keep these low carb yogurts in the office as snacks during the day as well, they satisfy the sweet tooth generally, and are filling.

Works for me!

Today I had two eggs over easy with low carb spicy sausage gravy. A cup of coffee with heavy cream and sweetened with stevia. A low carb breafast since I follow the Bernstein program.

What do you guys eat? I eat anything that doesn't eat me first :D. I eat two slices of low carb whole grain bread with no sugar added peanut butter and low sugar jelly, sometimes beef sausage or meatballs, and three scrambed eggs.;)

Don't forget you can eat vegetables at breakfast, too. :)

I eat all kinds of oddball things for breakfast, often left from cooking the night before. Last breakfast was stewed chicken with a small piece of carrot and of onion, seasoned with fennel and salted.

Sometimes I eat zucchini with tomatoes or a garlicky tomato sauce, with cheese on top,
or scrambled eggs or an omlet with spinach or other light vegetables.

Sometimes I'll eat sweet potato, plain, Or mashed with cinnamon. (Caution: measure your BG andkeep portions small on Sw.pot.)

A favorite is blueberries in real cream.

Ha, even tofu with broccoli is something I'd eat for breakfast. That reminds me, while I was warming breakfast this morning I was remembering the steamed pork belly I had at my friend's house. It is just another version of bacon, and I'd love to have it for breakfast.

Really, I eat anything for breakfast that I'd eat at other times of day. No problem. I do sometimes delay eating in the morning, though. But I am not working against any dawn phenomenon or injected insulin. That allows me to wake up before eating, so I feel like giving my food more consideration than if I had to just roll out of bed and swallow something quickly to get out of the house.

Bravo! Some people seem to object to egg yolks from what I hear. What is it they do not like? I always thought that yolks were much tastier than the whites. I can't eat an egg without the yolk...

As a type 1 pumper, I have to cover cereal with a little extra insulin. I do well with Special K Protein Plus and 2% Hoods Calorie Countdown milk.

My choices for breakfast are: scrambled eggs or an omelet; a low carb yogurt (Dannon's Carb/Sugar Control); one or two pieces of toasted light wheat bread with spray butter or peanut butter.

Good Luck!

I admit I'm not great for eating breakfast, I'm doing better these days, it certainly helps with weight loss. But I tend to eat light, mug of tea and a small slice of wholemeal bread. I used only eat breakfast (more of a brunch) at the weekends and it used to include a bowl of cornflakes with wholefat milk, don't generally miss the cereal (haven't had any in 5.5 months) unless I'm having a "feel sorry for myself, I have diabetes day" ;)

If you have time for breakfast, I'd look at the suggestions you have been given, meat, eggs etc and watch those carbs in cereal.

I have a goal of 40 carbs per meal. I frequently have a bowl of oats (1/4 c steel cut, 1/4 c oat bran) in the morning. I cook it for 45 min in 2 c water. It yields 230 calories and 35 carbs and I think it tastes good. My dietition thinks it is nearly ideal.

Forgot to add most days I have 7 almods or halves of walnuts with my toast and peanut butter. I just can not eat as much in the morning as I can at other times of the day. :(

This morning I had 1 fresh navel orange, 10 raw almonds, 30 oz water, and 30 reps each of 25 different calisthenics, then 3/4 cup of locally produced plain lowfat yogurt with blueberries, tart cherries, cinnamon, and agave nectar and more water.

Tomorrow I'll probably have an omelet with some locally grown fresh veggies and 75% fat free local sharp cheddar cheese (local) . Other days I might have a small portion of whole wheat Total mixed with hemp granola, blueberries, raw walnuts and local organic plain soy milk.

Eat local!

Hi Guys
Lowfat milk, I thought this would be a good breakfast. What do you guys eat?
Lowfat has nothing to do with diabetes - except that you can make a good case that fatty foods are good for diabetics because fat digestion slows down the absorption of any associated carbs.

I hate breakfast.
For most of my life breakfast was coffee.
Now I have almost 100% protein for breakfast.

"They" tell me I need the food so the Janumet won't upset my tummy.

Every morning I have a bowl of oatmeal (1/2 c dry) made with 1 cup skim milk. Microwave for 2 1/2 minutes, then stir in 1 Tbl peanut butter. The fat in the peanut butter helps me avoid a spike.

I'm a firm believer in balancing your meals as much as possible. I have 1 slice (usually) of "Woman's Bread" available at many health food stores. (There's a men's bread too, but I haven't purchased it.) The bread is only 11 carbs per slice with 4 grams of fiber. It's packed with whole grain and naturally rich in protein and vitamins etc. I add almond butter, a few blueberries most days, eggs with avocado on the weekends. Can't wait for breakfast!

The breakfast that sees the best post meal numbers for me is 6 large eggs (WHOLE eggs) soft scrambled (almost still runny) in real butter with a tablespoon of cinnimon and a few drops of liquid stevia added right at the end...

Sometimes I add a few strips of bacon or sausage patties.

:T :T :T

Not a single carb on the plate!
My 2 hour post meal numbers are always lower than my pre meal numbers when I do this. Last Sunday when I had this breakfast my pre meal bg was 236 and my 2 hour post meal bg was 204. (remember I'm still trying to find my lantus basil. Up to 17 units at bedtime now. I'm not yet bolusing)

I can't do this on work days so I settle for a glucerna diabetic shake for breakfast... which always causes my numbers to be 10 points or so higher than my pre meal numbers.

My breakfast usually consists of two hard boiled eggs. I'll only eat the yolk in one of them since I have eggs almost every morning. Turkey sausage pattie or 3 pieces of nuked bacon (pre-cooked).

I've tried oatmeal and the Glucerna cereal but they make me spike really high. I love cereal too but have given up for now.

I'll have to try out that peanut butter in the oatmeal trick and see what happens.

Really? Not even a spinach omlet or mexican omlet? That's too bad. We do need nutrients all day long, why not get a greater variety of them starting at breakfast?

Today, I forgot to eat and forgot my morning meds. When I remembered, I had half a banana and some milk. I had already been working, and have no troubles with high morning BGs, so I could stand the fast acting carbs of the banana & milk.

Oh yeah, another favorite breakfast food with vegetables would be a crustless "quiche" complete with the cream and cheese. I like it cold or re-warmed, as I would have to have prepared it the day before.

For a while I made eggy flax seed pancakes. No syrup though. Just butter. Somehow I've gotten away from that habit.

In my campaign ;) for veggie-inclusive breakfasts, I want to share that today's at my house featured green beans dry-fried, then seasoned with soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, and garlic. I also had a handful of fresh grape tomatoes, a nice, fresh wake-me up.

Having never consulted a nutritionist, I am probably going about this absolutely wrong but I usually eat one piece of whole wheat dry toast (or half of a whole wheat bagel) after I take my medication at 6:00am. Then I have a cup of dry cereal, usually rice krispies, at around 10:00.
