Something really strange happened today.

As I've posted previously, I've just started injecting (Lantus) and am working to get my basal dosage right.

My BGL is averaging in the mid 200s with the occasional 300 spike or 160ish dip.. But slowly coming down on the average as I slowly increase my insulin dosage...

Today my before lunch BGL was 261 which is about 30 points high foe me at that time of day right now, so for lunch I had deviled eggs, and canned corn beef. ZERO carbs.

2 hours after my first bite (2:00pm)I tested and my numbers were 148! I tested again and got 148!

113 point drop in 2 hours... Even though my BGL was by no means LOW I started having all those lovely symptoms of a Hypo crash... Dizzy, cold sweats, mild confusion, weakness... ACK!

I sat and ate 2 squares of 85% dark chocolate (4 carbs total) and just waited it out... It took an hour or so for me to start feeling functional again...

By about 5:30 ( I tested about 5 times between 2:00 and 5:30 and the rise was pretty steady) I was back up to 203 without eating anything after the chocolate, and just drinking lots of water (as always).

I'm really confused   as to why I would get that reaction when my BGL was at 148?!?

Strange!

I can't explain it, but these false hypos are common when people with chronic high BGs drop. It doesn't have to be near normal either.

:) Hi Poppa,
Your body is used to running on higher glucose levels so by bringing them down quickly (evan to normal levels) The body thinks it is having a low blood sugar level This causes you to feel the signs of a low.
In my opinion you did the right thing by having a few carbs. This treats the signs and symptoms without bringing your glucose levels up to high.
You will find as your levels get lower the signs of hypo will be less frequent.
Over the years when I decide to pull my finger out and stick to a good routine I can go through what you have mentioned.
I feel it must be a little of what and addict feels when withdrawing .

It's still acting kinda strange....

At 5:30pm I was 203, we ate at 6:00. I had about 1 1/2 cups of black beans and 4 small hamburger patties.

At 8:00pm My BGL was 196, at 9:00pm it was 177.

I think I'll check it one more time at bedtime 10:00, then at 3:00am, and 7:00am to see what it's going to do over night.

I know that soon after DX, I would get really shaky and dizzy if I got down near 100. Now, I can get down to 80 or maybe a bit lower before I feel it. I agree that it's your body getting used to such a big drop at once. Just eat a bit to level out and eventually I think your body will "catch up"!

Poppa, when your body consistently runs higher than normal blood sugars, over time these elevated numbers become "normal" for you. When your blood sugars start to normalize, your body is so used to highs being normal, that you feel low, even though you're just normalizing. This should resolve as you start having more consistently normalized blood sugars....then your body will recognize the lower #s as "normal."

This is often described as "Phantom Lows" and feel your pain. When big drops occur, for me, it feels like a huge smash of a hypo attack. I usually drink a little bit of carbs even though my bgl is back to normal just to avoid the phantom low experience.
