View Full Version : What is a fasting test

I normally consider my first test after I get up in the morning my fasting test. Last night I woke up 3ish feeling really off. Tested my bg it was 58. Ate 2 pieces of hard candy and drank some tea, it came right up so I went back to bed. Then when I woke up at 7 it was 115. Now it had been less than 4 hours since I had eaten so do I count the 7am as fasting or the 3am which had been 8 hours?

A fasting is 8 hours or more without food or drink, but since you were having a hypo I would not count that as a or normal fasting unless that is normal for you. I would test again when I made it all night without going hypo. Maybe eat a small snack before bedtime.

but since you were having a hypo.
Was she having a hypo? Do these meds cause hypos? Many of us bottom out in the night. While I would be concerned as I'm on insulin, I'm not sure she needed to be.
Don't get caught up in terminology. What did the test mean? Did you learn anything? Those are much more important questions to ask.
Glipizide can cause hypoglycemia.

but my glipzide was at 8 am yesterday so if it made me go low overnight that was a big drop from 160 at bedtime. I need to list something for my fasting bg today is the reason I asked. I do download everthing into the computer from my meters which will show all 3 readings from 3, 3:15 and 7 so when ever the doc sees it she will know what happened.

For the log I would still use the 7AM reading as per normal, but with a note to show the low reading overnight and the corrective measures taken.
Avandia may also cause hypos.
I have no idea how long any of the drugs stay in your system or if what time you take them makes any difference. You are taking 2 different drugs that list hypoglycemia as a potential side effect.
I'd suggest talking to your doctor right away as your meds may (or may not) need adjustment.
There is some reason you went so low.

Yes, I agree with the 8 hours. When you need to have a blood test done at the hospital that requires you to fast, they always say to fast for 8 hours.
I would disagree with the others in that if you tested at 3 am and it was 8 hours since you ate, then that would be your fasting BG for that day. Had you not gone to bed and stayed awake, you would have still had that number. By eating some candy and testing at 7am, that wouldn't have been a true fasting number.
The thing now is to find out why it was so low and to prevent it from going that low again, unless that's a normal fasting level for you. Has it ever been that low before?

It rarely goes that low and the fact that it had done so 2 times in the last 3 months was the reason for changing the avandia from 8 to 4 mgs. I had also taken the avandia at breakfast Wednesday morning. This is when the doc says take it as to prevent overnight lows.
I did eat supper earlier that usual and not what I usually eat because I got off work early and then went on to a meeting. I also was more active working on bullentin boards so it may be partially my fault but it was over 150 at bedtime which is the point that I have been told to eat if it is below before going to sleep. Maybe I had something that took longer than usual to digest and then when it did everything just went down at once.

I also was more active working on bulletin boards Is this kind of activity normal for you at that time of the day? We tend to concentrate of physical exercise as it relates to our BS but don't forget that (so I understand) the single biggest user of sugar in the body is the brain :)

I've got no advice Janlayton, only good wishes for you.
When I first joined this forum I was concerned about having a shorter life because of diabetes. Your sig declaring 40yrs of T2 gave me so much confidence.
I just didn't want to die before it was my turn to win the lottery :D
Big hugs to you & I hope you dont have more lows tonight ;)

I found this forum just a couple of hours after Dx trying to find out what D was . It was a very confusing time. The doctor cupped her hands on her lap & became all serious when she told she what it was...then I giggled because at last I had a name to why I'd been feeling wretched the past 10yrs.
I have great memories of my grandaughter being 2yrs. It was then that I was driving to uni & singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I realised I'd either lost the plot or was a devoted grandmother .
ah decisions... decisions... which one was it ? :D

Devoted g'mother of course! Well I was back up to 86 this am so I guess Wednesday nite was just a fluke. But I did note it on the log to talk to my endo about. So how old is your grand now? Katelyn has a 5 year old sister. My grandsons, who are both hypoglycemic, are 14 & 10.
