While in the States on holiday I came across ZSWEET, it seems to be a breakthrough for those of us having to be very aware of hidden sugars. I found
it great. L.

Welcome.

I've never seen it before, but on the rare occaision when I do add sweetener, it tends to be sugar. I don't buy often buy artificial anything.

So please tell us why you need to be aware of hidden sugars?

Zsweet isn't really new, nor is its main ingredient erythritol. Erythritol, however is one of the few sugar alcohols that passes both tests for people with diabetes:

1) Nearly ZERO glycemic load. Almost 100% passes through the system without being digested or absorbed.

2) Does not cause gastrointestinal irritation or a laxitive effect.

I want to find this product in a store. So far, I've only seen a few Hershey's products that contain erythritol in the States. Like any other sugar alcohol, it does have a cooling effect when you eat it, but otherwise, it's probably the best of the sugar alcohols I've seen to date.

Erythritol is the main ingredient in Zsweet as listed on the nutrition facts. The only other ingredients are natural flavors, which are from fruit extracts. It may not seem like an erythritol product because it doesn't have the cooling effect, but that's because they used the fruit extracts to eliminate it. I like it better than other erythritol sweeteners for that reason, because I don't like to have a minty taste with my coffee or in my smoothies.

Anyway, it is true its zero GI, and doesn't have digestive side effects which is the other reason I love it. Has anyone tried any sugar free maltitol candies? Ah! Those give me a stomach ache for a week.

Zsweet has some good low GI recipes on their website for desserts that won't give you gas. Haha... " )
