so, something happened the other day that's been bothering me:

i had a low while at a small family BBQ on the 4th of july, and at the time i couldn't tell. i remember sort of stumbling around and bumping into things really hard, but not feeling the pain that i should have, and then my hearing sort of went all funny, and i couldn't talk. then i noticed my grandma's hand was on my back and i heard her say that i was sweaty and pale and she asked if i was alright, but i couldn't say anything...and this is the part that bothers me...i heard my dad tell me grandma "ignore her, she's just acting stupid, she doesn't want to answer".:(

WTH???? then i started crying...come to find out later my blood sugar reading was 11. but before i checked it, everyone in the room starting yelling at me to answer and asked why i was crying and i heard my dad say "she's just trying to get attention, she's being stupid."

So basically, i ran into my room (stumbled more like), checked my blood sugar, and drank 3 juice boxes after sort of blacking out. and get this: i heard everyone laughing in the living room like nothing had happened. WTH???!!!??? i'm def. not an attention freak, but this has been bothering me since it happened. nobody even checked on me...:(   :( :( :(

Sorry you had such a horrible experience. Is this the first time your family has seen you hit a low?

You really need to talk to them all, calmly, and explain exactly what was going on with you so that the understand that they need to watch for that in the future. Were you really down as low as 11? How did you get so low, do you know?

Oh I wish I had been there I would have given your dad the butt chewing he needed . If i were you I would take my dad to the dr with you and let the dr tell him what happens when you get a low . This burns my butt the way your father acted . anyways i hope you dont suffer like this again and educate your family cause they sure sound like they need to be educated about this thing called diabetes . good luck to you .

I like this idea. He's obviously ignorant about your disease. Was he also drinking?

Grandma's also a good choice. Thank her for trying to help and tell her you really were in trouble. The message will get through to others PDQ!

It's kind of too bad you didn't pass out and start convulsing. That would have learned them all pretty quickly.

Sorry to hear you had such a rotten experience... some people can be quite thoughtless and it is especialy hard when family act without thinking. :(

I agree with John... talk to Grandma... she clearly was the only one sensitive enough to pick up that something was wrong, and if she is anything like my Grandma (rest her soul) she will get the rest of the family to wise up in double-quick time ;)

Sounds like some D education is in order for the family... #1: signs, symptoms and treatment of a low

nah, he wasn't drinking, we're non-alcoholics :)... But i guess that's what made it hurt more, he was himself, no alcohol to make him like that. and yea, i wish i had convulsed, actually, maybe they would've gotten the point i was "acting stupid". weird how family can be sometimes, huh? thanks xMenace :)

naw, wasn't the first time, but i think it was the first time it's dropped sooo low with them around. and yes, unfortunately my blood sugar was 11. I noticed when I have trouble sleeping/hardly any hours of rest at night, my blood sugar drops low throughout the whole next day, especially if I don't lower my insulin regimen that day...and I only had 3 hours of sleep the night before. weird, huh?

11 like 11 out of 100 being the norm? I'm surprised you were even conscious!!! EEEEEEEEK!!!

Yes, you'd better educate your family & fast. Speak to your grandma. Do you have a diabetes educator you work with? Have him/her talk with your family.

Also sounds like maybe you need to adjust your insulin regimen so that you don't get such low --again, speak with your doctor or CDE.

BTW, I'm on Oahu. Both my husband and our 11 y.o. have type 1 and we're very active in diabetes groups here. Which island are you on? PM me if you'd like more local moral support!

haha, yea, "11 like 11 out of 100 being the norm". i always seem to stay conscious with hypos, even when they're reall really low.

and yea, im working on the I:C ratois again, and I've re-learned a lot of what i had learned before but forgotten about diabetes on this forum. it's been a big help.

and oahu, huh? i live here too! i volunteer with the ADA in town and just started this week. that place has also re-taught me a lot of stuff i'd forgot about. but anyway, i'll def. PM you later, cuz i gotta get my butt up and run before i lose the gumption. nice to meet you and thanks for the support. :)

Definitely seems like some family education is in order, here. Do talk to Grandma. I suspect she will have the others straightened out in short order.

Doesn't the ADA web site have a list of low-BG symptoms? If so, print them out and give it to your family members.

Yes, convulsing would have been bad --but effective. Heh.

I'm glad you're OK, though. I know from reading here that kind of hypo can make you feel like garbage for a while.
