I love hot yoga but have not been sice being DX, the only exercise I have tried is ballroom dancing, and the first 15 minutes in I went low (28). I have been afraid to exercise since! I am going to hot yoga in the morning, any advice on eating/not eating before, regular insulin amounts?

I was diagnosed in feb. this year and did yoga every friday and I was fine. I was on MDI then and needed to start out higher or eat something before hand since I'm really sensitive to exersize but once I got the hang of what to do when I excersized it was fine.
Yoga was great for me so I think it's a good choice if it's something you love to do!
I can't say anything about the heat because I didn't do Bikram yoga. I'm not sure how the heat would effect your BG but you could look it up. I've heard that it depends on the person, for me, i tend to need less insulin in the heat, but I've heard the opposite. I'd say just try it out and pay close attention, test often, and then see what happens. You'll get the hang of it =D

when i was first diagnosed last year, my blood sugar would drop-just like yours does- when i exercised. my exercise consisted of resistance training coupled with a mile run and jump clinic, and i live in hawaii, where there's basically zero AirCon anywhere, even in the gym, so i was heated up constantly. i couldn't tell if the heat was from a low or not, so i started looking for different signs, like sudden hunger or calmness. Also, I usually drank a bottled water mixed with 15 g carbs of juice, or ate a small snack before-hand, which helped.
I checked my blood sugar every ten min.(a pain, i know, but you get used to it) too, and that kept me on track.
just try to listen to your body and it'll tell you what you need to know. i wish you the best of luck!

Hello Tkidwell, I was a ballet dancer in the 70's and lows are the absolute pits and those flurettes on en pointe is enough to get low. :(

Many seem to have trouble with rapidly dropping blood sugar levels upon onset of exercise. I suppose the best advice is try to have yourself up around 140 to 180 before starting and testing every 15 to 20 minutes so you can begin building a profile of how your body's metabolism behaves.

It's a pain the arse, but it can be done and you should be able to figure out what you need to do so you can enjoy the activities you wish to do.

Reduce the amount of insulin you take before you start the sport and make sure you eat a reasonable size meal. Starting a little high might help you as well. Take food with you, match the GI to the level of exercise, i.e. if its biking for 5 hours a slower carb like banana might be appropriate, if it’s something intensive like hot yoga (not sure what it is) take some high GI food (low fat, high carbs) like a sugary drink such as lucozade sport. The only way to find what works for you is to try it and see how you go, just remember to test often and stop if you get any signs of hypo/hypers. Take along glucogel as well in case of emergencies. Its really worth persisting you will get better at managing your D when exercising, there are so many benefits which outweigh the difficulties to start with.

Hey thank you,

I did a 60 minutes class (115 degree room) I only tok 2 novolog (normally 5) and ate a banana, before class i was 117, during (checked twice) I was 149 and after I was 180?

I feel AMAZING! I am thrilled to have worked out. So, @ 180 after what should I have done?

Virginia in July, you probably don't even need to go inside for hot yoga.

Generally for myself if I come out of something higher than expected, then I'll shoot a correction bolus for myself. 1u of Novolog for me moves me down around 35 mg/dl and I'll usually target myself to get back down to around 100 mg/dl. The problem is that it can be tricky after exercise -- I've had times where it's taken me a couple of more shots over the next few hours to get my blood sugar moving down -- sometimes it seems like the liver keeps pumping out glucose. Then other times it's like the muscles want to soak up sugar like a sponge and I'll see my blood sugar drop more than expected.

It's great that you're working on this. Keep records, take notes, be careful.

Be careful with corrections after exercise because sometimes exercise will keep bring your bg down for hours if not days depending on how strenuous it was. Answer is to test and test some more. :)

Yes, I'm aware of that.

I think it just depends on the person, but I just check my BG every hour after exercising because sometimes it'll spike, reach it's peak, then level out to pretty normal and sometimes low the rest of the day. However, there's been a lot of people on here who correct it with extra shots of like, 1 unit, so I guess it's just how your body reacts after the exercise.
