View Full Version : I did a stupid thing!

I am using Novorapid and NPH and for both insulin I have an identical pen and an identical case (I wrote a N on one and a D on the other to differenciate them). So, last night before bed I took what I thought was my NPH but for some reasons I never realized that I was injecting my Novorapid. And of course I injected 14 units (that is my usual NPH units). As you imagine I had a severe hypo about 45 minutes after I took the NPH. And because I was still not realizing that I took Novorapid I fixed my hypo like I usually do...with some OJ and mixed nuts. But few minutes after I was still feeling very bad and I gave up and hate everything I wanted. So this morning my BG's was 18,4....
I realized that I took my Novorapid when I saw the case on my night table! I felt very stupid!

Glad you made it though. Just about the only thing you can do is eat everything in sight. Don't feel too stupid, many have done exactly what you did.

You might want to come up with a way to more dramatically keep the 2 differentiated.

That's one thing I like about my Lantus vial with syringes and Novolog in the flexpens set up -- there's pretty much no way except for total and complete brainfart for me to mistakenly inject Novolog in place of Lantus or vise versa.

Oh dear,

I'm so glad you are ok. I bet you don't do that again any time soon, and hopefully NEVER again. Aren't you glad you had lots of carbs available? Thanks to my husband, we always have OJ and Pepsi in the house. You reminded me to pick up more glucose tablets too.

Be well Dominique!

Glad to hear you are now OK  Must be some way to make them obviously different

Unfortunately doing what you've done, in some variant or other is pretty normal part of the learning experience using insulin. Pretty much everyone has done similar.

glad it turned out ok!!!

I was at a concert w/ my dad last night.... I ate, then took the insulin I had put in my pocket of my jacket.... or so I thought. I took the right kind, but I took one that had been in my pocket, hanging in my closet, for who knows how long. I'm guess 2 month old. at room temp, insulin. The shot I brought with me was in the OTHER pocket with my cell phone. No tester, and venue food.... omgosh I felt dumb.

Been there done that have the t-shirt LOL...I know it is not funny....

I was preggo's and injected 32 units of humalog that was supposed to be my lantus, as you can imagine....I ate a lot, by an hour I was guzzling syrup and Brent was calling the ambulance but thank god, I never needed anything and since I was prego's I was 512, about 4 hours later OOPS....but I had five pepsi cans, three candy bars two sandwhiches a half of chocolate chip pie, and taking spoons of syrup, all for an hour, when it peaked the humalog, I was dropping that last number 40, my head was spinning the body was going, I took the syrup and chugged it like some college student at a frat party.....never have I ever looked at syrup again, and mind you I chugged half a bottle and at 53 carbs per 1/4 cup thank god I was only 512.....I consumed about 1000 carbs no lie....seems like

I guess that now you're OK now and in diabetes terms feel like a dunce. We all have our faults Dodo and have a crash course to our meter.
Have a cup of real nice coffee with some sugar, Yes the real stuff and just pause for 10 minuets. :T Don't feel so bad. :D

Sorry to hear about your confusion. Glad it's all better now.

Back when I was on shots, I was using insulin pens for my regular (this was before rapid analogs) and NPH. They were identical pens like yours. My mom got gold and silver paint pens and I colored regular silver and NPH gold. I could tell every time I picked it up which one I had grabbed. No surprises.

Glad you are ok.

Could you put a rubber band around one of the pens, that way even in dim lighting they would feel different?

I feel better now that I know I'm not the only one who done something like that!

Let's say that last night I was very careful and that I'll make sure to pick the proper pen from now on! I think I'm gonna try the rubber thing!

And ant hill, I had a French toast with Nutella to make me feel good! It was nice to pause for a couple of minutes! Great advice! Thank you!;)

That's the go Dodo, We do get into some strife with mistakes but the main thing is to take it easy. I can get that Nutella here and french toast, Whaa that's a great snack. :D  :D

It has happened a couple of time that i forget i've already bolused and don't get that "did i take my bolus before?" thoughts, and just take my bolus and end up having twice as much as i should have had:eek: Luckily it hasn't happened on those times i have rather massive bolus doses! But yeah, accidentally have 20 units when needing 10 does mean a lot of soda and snacks :T About 100g of carbs to be more specific...

Been there, done that- after more than 10 years of injecting! I used glucose tablets (why don't you have any, hmmmmm?) and checked my BG every 15 minutes until I was back to normal. Wasn't fun. It's the sort of thing you only do once.

I'm so sorry you can't get Nutella ant hill! That is one of the most tasteful food ever!:)

I bought stickers yesterday that glow in the dark so I put one on my NPH case.

I'm feeling much better today! I had a weird day yesterday as I had ups and downs all day. I woke up at 6.4 this morning which is great and two hours after breakfast I'm at 9.8 so I should have a good BG at lunch!

Thanks to everybody who shared their stories. I really appreciate it!

Well I can get that lovely stuff and the idea of having that on french toast. I guess this is a good carb that's kinda slow. :)

That's a good idea. :)
