My husband is a type1 diabetic. He has been since 2001. When he was born his body produce way too much insulin so the dr.s removed 95% of his pancreas. When he hit puberty he became a diabetic.

He use to be on the Novolog insulin pen for meals and lantus at night. But since 2007 and seeing the Dr. he has managed to get off the Novolog and just take 50 units of lanuts at night before bed.

My question is.. He has been coughing for about 3-4 wks now. When it first started it was a hard, rough cough with mucus. he would cough so hard he would want to vomit. I gave him Mucinex, it helped a little but the cough persisted. We went to the dr. 2 weeks ago and the dr. said he has some brochitis. prescribed amoxicillan and poly tussin for the cough. He is not coughing up as much mucus and no coughing as often but still does have the hard cough at times. It doesn't make him want to vomit now either.

what is the cough persisting? what should we do? I don't want another round of antibiotics.

Has he had a chest x-ray? If not, i'd suggest he get one to make sure he doesn't have pneumonia...or worsening bronchitis.

That being said, seems the cough with bronchitis lingers a long time (or it does for me anyways), and seemed to be worse in the mornings and late evenings. If his mucus is clear and he's not got a fever, he probably doesn't have an infection. Have him increase his fluids, as this will help thin out the mucus. Also I found that if I kept a cough drop in my mouth throughout the day, the coughing was less severe.

Hope he feels better soon!
