Hey there,

I have been VERY high all day even now! Still learning so need advice. I haven't eaten much today, obviously not feeling well because of being high (200 range) Tested so much today my fingers hurt. I had been doing so well this week and today I had an apple, some nuts, 2 ounces turkey, 1 ounce cheese and water ALL DAY!!! Starving now!

Am i not eating enough? Dr's orders are 5u novolog before meals and 24u levimire before bed, however, I started last week doing 1u novolog for 10g carbs and split my levimire 12u in am and 12u at bedtime, seemed to be working fine until today!

also gained 12 pounds since DX just less than 4 weeks ago! What am I doing wrong? How can I get low now? Do I just go to bed hungry?

Your not doing anything wrong. Until you get things stablized a bit, you will gain a few pounds. Also if you are counting the weight you lost before diagnosis, odds are you will gain most of that weight back.

If you find you are high, you may need to give yourself some correction insulin. It is almost impossible for a type one on a varied diet to use a static amount of fast acting insulin daily.

Sudden blood sugar increases in me happen for the following reasons:

1. Bad insulin (have you been storing it outside of the refrigerator, has it been exposed to high temps in your purse, and how long has it been open?)

2. Hormones -just before your period you can get some serious insulin resistance, causing you to require a LOT more insulin than normal. It usually resolves once your period starts.

3. Steroid injections -steroid injections or pills for dental surgery, shoulder pain, allergies, whatever, can wreak havoc on your blood sugar, making you horribly insulin resistant, but it resolves once the steroid is out of your system.

Try opening a new bottle of insulin first, and see if that makes a difference. Bad insulin acts like water.... just totally ineffective.

I hope your not a bloke but are you about 14 days from your period,(ovulating) or on the day your having your period. That can send your readings high.

See what LancetChick said above. She makes some very valid responses. Also have you been under higher stress with the tourists in Va. Beach? I remember summers in that area used to be quite hectic when I went to Lynnhaven Mall for R.H.P.S.

I forgot to add that getting sick can jack your blood sugar like that as well.

Hi there - I just started another thread on this and not getting too many replies....i am finding just before period im needing masses on insulin but as its only a couple of days per month im finding it hard to figure out exactly how much more basal and bolus i need....any ideas? it seems to be i need maybe 1.5 times normal of both basal and bolus, perhaps even more.....

Yup, that sounds about right. It varies with me, probably because I'm in my 40's now and things are getting wacky, but I need up to twice the insulin (both basal and bolus) when I get hormonal. Honestly, it drives me nuts, and the next time I see my endo I'm going to ask for metformin. Some people use birth control pills to tame the hormonal rollercoaster.

Hey everone, thank you for replies, BUT I haven't had my period in 3 months!!! DX June 19th and told Dr this, he said I was severely malnourished on top of D and it was normal. Never imagined saying this, but I want to have it so i feel like I am somewhat getting back to normal!

I realize it's ridiculous to be whining about the weight but, I am petrified it will keep going up! I feel HUGE! I feel bloated! I was 100 pounds @ diagnosis (way to thin) but now 115 (yes, still small) but I FEEL huge. I am really trying to think that it is waaaay more important to worry about my insides rather than the outside but mentally, I am struggling with it.

My numbers are lower today, but still not great, maybe it is the time I am supposed to get my period?

As you are newly diagnosed, it could just be your honeymoon period is just coming to an end so you will need more insulin.

I was leaning more towards illness or possible infection. Try and get some rest and see if your numbers start to stabilize. Maybe take in a midnight showing of Rocky Horror. Not easy, I know, as opening a restaurant can be stressful and tiresome. Make sure that you are getting enough sleep.

I know when I was diagnosed I weighed 56 pounds, and a couple weeks after starting insulin I gained almost twenty pounds...I've continued to gain weight, but I've also learned how to maintain a healthy weight at the same time. It'll all settle down soon.
