Hi. I'm still very new to this insulin thing. I'm on Humalog 75/25, 10 to 15 units with dinner.

Last night I injected 12 units to cover 45 grams of carbs for dinner. Two hours later my BS was 296! 45 minutes after that it was 269. This is higher than before I started using insulin.

Is it possible the insulin has gone bad? It's a Kwikpen, used for 21 days. I didn't know what to do. Should I have opened a new pen and injected some insulin? How much? I was afraid of going hypo during the night so I just went to bed with a high BS. In September I'm going to ask my endo about MDI, but in the meantime, any help would be greatly appreciate. Thanks!

I'm not sure what's going on here, but my understanding of the mixed insulins is that they aren't used to cover carbs for dinner. The basic problem is that it is a mix of basal and bolus insulin -- covering carbs is accomplished with strictly bolus insulin, or the idea of MDI you wish to ask your endo about.

Traditionally using mixed insulins has been part of a program where the diabetic injects 2x a day, once in the morning and again in the evening. Meals are to be held at scheduled times as well so as to generally fit with the rapid portion of the mix to handle the carbs.
