View Full Version : Been Really Sick

Ok, so I have no idea what the heck is going on. I had that spate of highs the other day that I posted about, but ketone-wise, was ok.

Not for the last 24 hrs.

Yesterday, I was over 33.3 (600) for over 4 hrs. I had ketones going between small and moderate all day. I threw out both my novo and lantus, and was injecting from new bottles. I was rotating sites. I had over 150u of novo in 24 hrs. And still, the lowest I have been since lunchtime yesterday (its 8am now) is 23.2 (418).

I've vomited twice, and every time I've called the endo and DE (they're so sick of me now), they've said to keep managing as I am at home, that I'm doing great. Also, they said its a good thing I'm not pumping at the moment - they think that because I have so many ketones even with the lantus and injecting ever 1 1/2 - 2 hrs, I'd prob be in ICU with just the rapid running.

Unfortunately, I've also managed to drop 2.8 kgs (6.2 pounds) since waking yesterday morning. Sure, I wanna lose some weight, but not like this, and not so much so fast. Thats just kinda scary.

I'm pushing insulin and water... does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm just so darn tired now.

I would be concerned that you are losing minerals and electrolytes, which leads to heart problems. It sounds like it could be time to go to the ER. Don't leave it too late.

Kit,

You aren't alone are you? And you ARE taking extra insulin for the ketones, right? You still can't get below 400?

Do you have fever too?

No fever, and mum is here. I've had over 150 units in 24 hrs.. I'd normally take around 25 units on a bad day...

Blood ketones are now 2.2. Heading to hospital.

This is so strange...I really feel for you and know you are frightened. I would be too.

First, I'd buy new insulin from the store...you may have a bad batch in the fridge.

Something similar happened to me in college (prior to meters and MDI)...I really needed an IV to get my electrolytes back in balance, then everything fell into shape. Those electrolytes will make you very insulin insensitive...I barely remember the details and I was young so didn't talk much with the doc...(Unlike how I would be stuck to him like a mosquito today!)

Is your doctor an endo or a general? Make sure you are talking to an endo and insist on seeing the doctor. I've been in the doctor's office when people call in...and the concern on the other end of the phone is often minimal...so don't be afraid of being assertive.

Are you going through PMS? I always run slightly higher...slightly being the key word. This sounds more extreme.

Are you urinating more than normal? Sorry to be so blunt, but this sounds like it would be the case.

I am wondering if there is a chance that your entire supply of insulin was exposed to heat or freezing. Just thinking out loud here.

I am sure you are feeling awful. I would not wait much longer to go to the ER.

Kit,

Get well real quick, I need somebody to poke me in chat. I'm going away for two weeks, you better be fully recovered when I get back. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, give your Endo and DE a kick from me, don't care if they are "sick" of you, it's their da*n job to look after you!

Thanks, you guys!

When I got to hospital, bg was down to 18.7 (337), but ketones were up to 3.2. Bg headed back UP to 25.7 (463) and ketones his 3.6. They did bloods, and the gases were out, but everything else appeared normal ???

IV insulin all day and overnight, lots of fluids, and came ome about an hr ago... have developed a nasty cold tho, so that may be it.

Thanks, you guys.. it's good to be home.

The staff at the hospital were really good... Very efficient, very thorough. I was seen within about 5 mins of walking in the doors, despite a very full waiting room, and was on a ward within a few hrs. They were testing me every 30 mins overnight, and my IV decided to fail at 2am, so I woke in tears because of the pain from my arm swelling (all the fluid was running straight into the tissue), and due to my crappy veins, they had to call a dr up to do the resite.

My numbers started heading back up again tonight, but I hit the novo HARD... and was 7.4 (133) at dinner.

I'm exhausted... absolutely wrecked, so I'm heading to bed... but thank you soooo much for your thoughts and prayers.

Is it possible you are taking a steroid without knowing it? I had something similar to that happen to me many years ago after I got a new prescription from the pharmacy and it turns out I had been given a steroid.
