View Full Version : Laser Surgery A Week Ago / Update

To update my previous thread about PRP laser surgery I had on my right eye on Monday, July 21, my eyelid's not swollen now and my eye's not watering.
HOWEVER, my right eye is still really dialated. I'm worried about it. Doesn't seem like it should still be (?) since it's been a week. Feeling "worked up" nervous. I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow morning and see what he says and will update then.
Supposed to have the same thing done on my left eye Wednesday and just scared that it hasn't gone correctly on my right eye.

This morning the doctor said that there can be swelling that makes the eye stay dialated but there are ways to deal with it. I told him if my left eye will be like the right eye after surgery, I will not be able to read and therefore not able to do my job. He said he will look at my eye on Wednesday and probably do more pictures (just had pics last Monday), but probably not do the left eye surgery until the right eye stabalizes.
Just to update...

Jill, I am glad you were able to contact your doctor and hopefully you feel less anxious now - sounds like your doctor will take it cautiously. Good luck and fingers crossed that your right eye soon normalizes. :)

I'm thinking prednisone drops, but I don't know. If so, don't worry about the BGs. It has no effect where injections are near impossible to deal with.
Hi Jill,
I'm thinking of you and wishing you well. After my last V, I had to use prednisone and three kinds of glaucoma meds for a few months. This eye stuff is no fun and I'm hoping you move onward soon.
Go hug a horsie :) for me.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I hope you recover quickly.
I have a questions. I have been diagnozed with Diebetis Retinotopy and will be undergoing 4 laser treatment starting Tuesday. Can you tell me if that is the same procedure you went through. how long is the procedure and was it painful

Welcome Stinger,
Very likely it is. It's a bit painful but not unbearable. Take some painkillers beforehand. It's more very hard work. Sessions can be up to 30 minutes or more with a lens pushed up to your eye and an extremely bright light blaring in. About 500 zaps. It's very uncomfortable. But many go through 1000 or more in one session.

Stinger, I think John's right and it is probably what I had.
My doctor gave me a shot in my lower eye lid (I've had many shots of avastin in my eye itself...). I was real apprehensive about this particular shot hearing it really hurts.
It doesn't actually hurt, so to help you if you heard rumors. It gave me a very uncomfortable sensation but it wasn't painful. It was mostly the shock of how it felt that unsettled me and i'm not worried about the shot for the left eye on Monday now that I know that's how it's supposed to feel. It felt like a lot of pressure pressing down on my eye and lower face. It's just more of a shocking thing to feel, but not actually painful.
My right eye -- STILL -- is dilated. I started on drops called Xibrom on Wednesday evening to be done 2x a day actually in both eyes. To shrink my right pupil and to hopefully make the left not go this way. When the doctor checked me Wednesday, he said there was swelling / edema from the surgery, that it would have been worse had I not been getting avastin shots, handed me these drops and scheduled Lefty for Monday.
If the pupil in my right eye isn't normal, or if I cannot read from my right eye, then I am not going to let him do it. I cannot work if I cannot read. Hopefully some big improvements start happening soon.

Not sure what kind of laser surgery I have had but had no pain. Took no pain medication. I meant to question the doctor about the last time I saw him but forgot. He only did a few zaps both times and was well pleased with that eye in July. Will see him again in January.

Last year, I also had very minor laser surgery. It had no recovery time, no pain, easy easy. This kind is different, though.

Hi Jill.
i had my laser surgery about a year ago in my right eye. my eye stayed dilated for about 3 weeks before it went back to normal. my eye still a year later reacts slower than my left eye. my doctor said that this is side affect of the laser treatment and is due to scar tissue around the nerve that controls the dilation of the eye.
it takes a few minutes for my eye to adjust from going into a bight area or a dark area.

After I had my PRP procedure, I had to use reading glass for several months. Then my eyes went back to normal and no more reading glasses!!!:D
I had a lot of zaps to my right eye and the left eye was done later that week (but not as many zaps). My eyes did not stay dilated very long, but the pupils were slightly unequal for a while.
I did not find the procedure to be painful, but it was uncomfortable. It almost felt as if someone was lightly punching me in the nose. WEIRD!!
Oh well, my eyes have at least stabalized now.:)

Thanks folks.
The proceedure was not at all painful to me, it was just very painful for a few days following. My eyelid was swollen mostly shot for awhile, my eye kept watering and the whites looked puffy. It was nothing like my first laser treatment.
My right eye is still very dilated and has swelling inside (per the doctor). I'm to keep doing these Xibrom drops for the next week and see him again on Thursday. If it is still swollen then, I get a shot that will reduce it quickly from what he's said. And we will schedule Lefty (dreading based on how rough the recovery on Righty has been -- and I'm actually pretty tough so this is pretty bad.)
