hey guys
so i just got my roommate and dorm placement (ill be a freshman this fall)

any advice on how to tell her and others i will meet in college about my diabetes?
i've seen that letter on the JDRF website, but was wondering if anyone else had good advice

It might be too late....but
when I started college, my mother call the University on campus housing office and they place me in the same room as another T1. It was a great experience to see how another T1 managed her diabetes.

When you tell someone, just start with the basics. For example, that with T1 your pancreas stops making insulin and you have to replace that insulin in the form of shots. Also explain that since you have to regulate the amount of insulin, you have to watch and adjust your food, exercise and anything else that can change your glucose level.

That should be a good start.

Just tell them. If they have a problem with it then they aren't worth your time and effort. Most people are ok about it as long as you tell them the basics and don't overload them with info, if they are true friends they will ask you to tell them more, some may even do some research themselves.
