I still think there are serious difficulties posed by the current situation of lagtime from subcutaneous infusion of insulin through a pump -- currently this means there is approximately 1.5 hours until the infused insulin reaches peak activity and that is a marked difference from how insulin is released from functioning beta cells in the pancreas.
Perahps this difficulty can be sufficiently solved with clever enough algorithims, but I still think the simple fact of the matter will be that it'll be nothing like a pancreas really -- it'll only be rough fascimile that might be able to do a moderately better job of controlling blood sugars than can be presently achieved as we are now.
In my opinion, an actual cure would be a far better result to allocate resources and research to.
