For the last 18 days, my pump shows an average glucose of 96 and a SD of 15. The values were entered from my onetouch meter. 5.5 tests a day average.

For 18 days of data, my navigator shows an average of 91 and a SD of 17. The navigator uses freestyle strips to calibrate.

I think this shows that averages and Standard deviations, derived from 5.5 tests a day are really pretty valid.

Note that this 18 day period coincides with my walking 5 miles a day for about 13 of those days. Managing glucose during that time was pretty hard, the navigator was a big help.

SD during the walks is likely about 30 :)

I have been tweaking my basals, my readings at night have been REALLY good, so the navigator picks up on that.

How big of a role does SD play? Can big swings like 55-175 be dangerous and hazardous to health?

There is evidence that variability in glucose, in itself, is a risk (apart from the average).

If you think about it, a non-diabetic does not go as low as 55 or as high as 175. And a non diabetic recovers from whatever peak they may have after a meal, very quickly!

Sd is a measure that shows the highs and lows, a way to measure how much, how long, and how often they happen.

Is it as important as average? I think not. Is it important? I think so.
