She's switching gears again

Hi again :)

Well, Eri's starting to switch gears on us again...she's going from hypers to hypo's. Checked her BG this am around 5:45....she was 41mg/dL....was hard to wake her up(usually easy, especially w/ Roxy, her kitten, jumping on her stomach)...she's had hypo's all week...the one at her friend's house was the worst. She was really low, glassy eyed and couldn't even remember if she liked a certain food. (she used to be like that all the time)...her ped. said she was a far way away from a period, so maybe just stress. Her dad is out of town, still injured, but has to appear in court...not sure when he'll be back...sometime this week...her half-brother living w/us...they don't get along too well(he told her he hated diabetecs), that broken arm(she took her cast off, well, arm slipped out)...and it's still painful...and that didn't help the healing of the burn she had on that wrist. Oh, and she really doesn't like her school, she's been waiting to be transfered to another, but that one is full. Maybe all this stress is causing these new readings?

It may be thr stress, but I remember having very drastic blood sugar swings when I was a kid. I guess it may be all the stress of your body growing and changing. If she's all ready unaware of her hypos and hypers, it may be more serious than that. I was able to notice mine and usually compensate for them. How often does she check her sugars?

I hope you are able to get Eri's pump soon and hopefully once her basals are worked out her bgs are more stable. Her poor body doesn't know what's going on I'm sure!!

I hope she doesn't take what her brother says to heart. Siblings AHHH!! My two will say mean things to each other and a little while later they are playing together like nothing ever happened, yet my hair strands stay gray forever!!
You must have school choice down there too. I hope a seat opens up for her at the school she wants to go to.

I will pray for you- strenght and patients!! God knows we parents need lots of both!!

I have big problems with low blood sugar when I'm under stress. I have to wonder if it isn't at least contributing to the problem.

Hi Robin,

THanks for updating us on how Eri is doing. So she is running low lately? That can't be fun for her. I know you mentioned she is on a salad kick, but hopefully she is adding some carbs in there. Or perhaps she could reduce her short acting insulin if she is going to eat very little carb. at meals. If this continues to be the trend, I would call her doctor. Perhaps they could help her adjust her insulin doses.

I know it's frustrating dealing with these highs and lows, but it sounds like you are doing an excellent job. Hang in there~ :)

Hi all...

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to this post...

Well...Eri switched on me again...She has been having some PERFECT readings...then I get a phone call from the school today saying she won't stop throwing up. UGH!!! She just saw her endo last Thursday!!! I'm trying to get her to test her ketones, but she is so dehydrated from vomiting that she can't. She's all clammy, so I guess I'm going to just take her to her pediatrician first and then he will deal w/ her endo(her endo is almost an hour away). Beginning to think that Mondays just do NOT agree w/ this child!!!
(Oh, btw, her stress is unbelievable lately...a LOT of pent up aggravation w/ the whole situation I mentioned...wonderfing if that has anything to do w/ it...it's causing a LOT of friction between her and her dad)...
OK, shutting up and getting ready for her pediatrician.

Poor Eri! I hope this doesn't continue. Wish I had some advice, but I was dx'd as an adult.

We just got back home(LOOOONG wait)...and he said either flu or nerves...her ketones were ok...sugar still a bit high(300's)...he, of course, doesn't have the flu vaccine, or he would give it to her.
She's sorta out of it right now, but throwing up at least 8 times will wipe out anyone.
I am going to watch her today/night and see how all goes, or else she'll see the endo tomorrow. Last time she was this sick, she ended up in the hospital.

I wish I could give you the answers to these problems you have been having, but of course life isn't that easy. I'm glad to hear that Eri has had some real good days, that's great :thumbsup:, but i'm also sorry at the same time that she also has tough days controlling those highs. To feel sick like that is an awful feeling that no one should go through.

I hope your Pediatrician can provide you with the information you need to deal with those difficult days and I hope that you start seeing those perfect numbers again.

Hi Robin,

I am sorry Eri is not feeling well. My daughter had the same thing yesterday, no fever, no warning. She slept almost all day and ate nothing. In fact I got up this morning at 4am worrying about her because I didn't know how long it had been since she did eat, but my husband said she had nachos Sat. night (he took her and some friends to the skatepark from 7-11:30pm for her birthday) so I felt just a little better. She felt much better this morning and wanted to go to school. I hope Eri has a quick recovery too.

Erica's been asleep since we got home. B/f she fell asleep, she argued w/ her dad that she was NOT at the doctors...I took her sugar and she was 411. She just keeps on rising.
I'm getting ready to test her again.

Hi Robin,

I sure hope Eri can get on the pump soon. I really worry about her high levels. :eek: It's definitely true that high sugars can affect moods and such, as well as causing nausea. We'll keep you all in our thoughts and prayers, and hope she can start "pumping" soon. :)

The GOOD news is NO ketones...bad news, she's still throwing up.
The doc seemed to lean more towards stress, b/c her temps were only like 96.7 then 97.1(she runs low like me)....
Stress is still quite high for her...LOOOOONG story, and I'd just bore you all w/ it, but I'm praying she stops puking.

Hi again :)

Well, she stayed home from school today...throwing up in the middle of the night...plus then she has to get up around 5:30/5:45 for her shots...and when I tested her(I let her sleep while I give the shots, then wake her up after, figure may as well spare her once per day, she already is getting up 30-45 minutes earlier than her brothers)...anyhow, her bg was 55. Quite a drop from yesterday...
She has not thrown up since the middle of the night...thank GOD...so now she is just catching up on homework(nice mom that I am went to the school and got it ALL for her...lol).
She's in the middle of reading Diabetes 101 also, and will do her report on that.
That's about it from here...at least w/ just her...lol :)

LOL Mike, if you only knew what it is really like around here!!!LOL
I swear, since the beginning of my and my husbands relationship(we owned a restaurant), our lives have been dubbed either "As the Meatball Turns" 'or "As the Eppie Burns"...NEVER a dull moment in this household!!! With 4 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats and now a charboiled husband, I think that's enough to keep me busy!!!
(well, he's not as charboiled as he was...that actually healed, now it's onto fixing the nerve damage!!! Yea!!!)

Oh, and Eri, btw, is doing a LOT better....held down food all day, kept her sugars in the somewhat normal range and decided it was time to go on a cleaning spree(she LOVES to re-arrange and clean)...odd child...lol

Just remember this: It is always darkest before dawn. Yep, I never really knew what it meant but I think it's funny. I believe that Eri will be ok and you will survive all of this. Let me know if ya need need me.

I always try to find the humour somewhere. I know things will work out for Eri...I have a strong faith in that. The past 4 months here have been so crazy lately....it's a wonder that I am still somewhat sane!!!
