What an aggravation--bear with me here, back in April I had my regular contact lens/comprehension eye exam. Overdue actually but because the charge even with insurance for a monovision exam is so expensive we had to save for quite some time to reach the charge. This was the beginning on how I found out I had diabetes. Went, she did the Opto Mapping, the field vision test etc. Says my prescription changed dramatically and sent me home with a trial pair. That should of been a red flag to me or maybe to "her". I couldn't see like I used to. Back I go after trying them for two weeks. She says..here try three other strengths and come back in a week. I still couldn't see as sharp as I had. Then she asked "How's your blood sugars?"...Uh? I don't know but I have a doctor's appt. in three days. She says well I can't give you a prescription since your vision isn't stabilized and says "I guess you won't know for a while"..Off I go to the doctor's appt. and the rest I tearfully relayed here.
Now the Endocrinologist, and thanks to all of you here I knew I had to wait at least three months till the sugar was steady. Fine, after my vision went completely blurred--like what did these people expect me to do? I called this week and was now told because it's 5 months since I had the initial exam, this outfit is charging me more fees. I've already chucked out $141 plus the $72 they received from our insurance for a total of $213. I have no precription for either glasses or contacts. She said.."this is the fee Dr. R****** charges if I had any questions to call him". That I did, and they still want more money. The good news is our EPO refreshed and all my vision benefits returned...but who has another $141?? Not me. I called the EPO, who were very sympathetic but it's not going to bring me what I need right now.
Sorry to dump such a weepie tale but maybe I can stop someone else from making the same mistake I've made? Maybe someone can help me with this question--if I opted to bypass an Optometrist in lieu of going to an Optomologist (not sure of the spelling) can the latter do the same eye exam and prescribe contacts?
Thanks for any advice :)
