hi everyone. i am in my 20th week with my first baby and i just had my blood sugar tested(few days ago) through the 1 hour OGTT. the result was 204.3mg/dl and my ob said its really high. I am very confused because its my first time to have my blood sugar tested and my father was a type2 diabetes and i am having a strong prediction that maybe i already have this diabetes before i got pregnant and i was researching through the internet regarding my case, the most crucial part of pregnancy where the baby is forming its organ is in the first trimester. and during my first trimester until i was diagnosed with having diabetes i didnt had any control with my diet.i eat whatever i want particularly ice cream, cakes, spag, those very sweet and fatty foods. and i am very afraid now that maybe during my first trimester something bad already happened..like my babys having a birth defect... please anyone of you out there please spare me some of your advices and experiences...

Hi ichiglai, I'm sorry to here about your diabetes result. Having high blood glucose levels do increase risks in pregnancy. You weren't to know about the diabetes. If your test with a blood glucose meter before meal and 2 hours later that would help you know what your blood glucose levels are so you can keep them under control. Also seeking the help of endocrinologist or diabetes educator to teach you about carb counting. Carbohydrates good nutrition for pregnancy but also raise the blood glucose level. You can keep a record of how many units of carbs you eat for each meal and compare it to your blood glucose record book. Carbohydrates include milk, cereal, bread, sugar, jam , fruit, potatoes, rice and soft drink. In carb counting 15g carbohyrates is 1 unit of carbs. The carbohydrates are written in a nutrition panel on the back of the packet. For example weetbix is 20.1g per serving so that is 1 1/3 units of carbohydrates.

Also fat, meat and green vegetables like beans peas do not raise your blood sugar levels. You should be on insulin too so see a doctor about this asap.

Hi there,
I really can't me of great help, as I have no experience with diabetes and pregnancy but I wanted to welcome you to the forums.
Just something to consider, before having the blood sugar test did you have any symptoms of diabetes? I ask as you are concerned that you had undiagnosed diabetes, but that may not be the case - just something to consider.

Most women who show symptoms of gestational diabetes will revert to being completely healthy after the pregnancy.
However, they do tend to have a higher chance of later suffering from type 2 diabetes.
in your case, you already have an increased chance from your family ... but what I'd suggest is simply monitoring the situation, eating healthy, exercising, and above all - get on with your life. if it happens, deal with it; otherwise, you'll soon have a little baby to worry about :)
Hope all goes well

Gestational diabetes like cormac doyle usually goes away after the pregnancy ends. Doctors usually like diabetes to go on insulin just for the pregnancy so the diabetes is controlled better.
