I'm coming down with a cold. My first cold since being diabetic... so I was wondering, should I just treat it as normal and rap up warm, or should i go see a doctor?

Sorry to hear you are getting sick. I just got over a long cold. Anyhow, just take the best care of yourself as you can and watch the bg level. Evidentally when a person is sick their bg can go up.

Hi LauRa Lu
Your bgs may go up if you are sick, Thomas' do.
Wrap up in a nice warm blanket with some chicken soup (actually works and not too high in carbs) and feel better soon.
Actually that sounds pretty good to me right now!!

... Laura, just take good care of yourself. Eat right, plenty of fluids, try to get some rest and a few good night's sleep and keep track of how BG is doing as it will most probably go up. I've never had probs with colds. It's the flu I dread the most, as it always means a chest infection in my case. Perhaps a little vitamin C would be a good idea Laura? Hopefully, you'll get over this in no time. If BG goes through the roof or if you really feel unwell, I'd ring the doc just in case.
I do hope you'll be fine in a matter of a few days.
Take good care now,
Marie

Thanks for the advice.
Will certainly be getting some soup and vitamin C. :)
I don't get my flu jab for two weeks... so i just hope this cold stays being a cold and doesn't turn into the flu before then!
I felt really dehydrated this morning, I didn't realise it was probably because of my cold.

Laura,
You might look into getting and having on hand some of the "Cold Remedies" for Diabetics.
Granted, they don't cure you but they do, sometimes, make you feel better while you have the cold.
I was always partial to Dayquil before I joined the Diabetes Team. Haven't had a cold even since dx'd so I really don't know what ones to recommed.

Umm there are some diabetic cold medicines...i can't remember who makes them but you can find them in the diabetic section of the pharmicies...i would drink lots of fluid check you bg more often and watch you ketones cause i used to get sick a lot and I'd always end up with ketones and then get dihydrated and end up in the hospitial.

Our pharmacist has a nice little phamphlet for all to pick up and it states that one can add the following 3 things to help the body
to boost it's immune system and thus get rid of a cold quicker.
They are: 1) 2000 mg/day of Vitamin C
2) Zinc 50 mg/day
3) Echinachea
I found that it is really interesting that now pharmacists are
adding herbs to their recommendations in print.
One must always remember to check their meds to see if they
might interfere if they are going to try this.
Apparently, you can take some of the cold remedies and your cold will last longer than if you don't. At least this way your body is
improving it's immune system on it's own so it seems to work the
fastest.
(One way or another I'm going to get more antioxidants in you like Vit. C<smile>) Let me see the antioxidants are A,C, E and grape seeds.
