Insulin absorption

Im having problems when I shoot my humulog and im not absorbing insulin. Just asking everyone where they shoot and how often. I know some spots like the stomach, thigh, upper buttocks and back of arm but I hit an all time high today because im not getting my insulin. My sugar was 581 so I shot in the arm again and now it’s coming down to 477 but I can’t keep taking double shots. Is there any other place to shoot?

I don't think it will matter where you inject. It sounds like you have an insulin resistance problem. There is a medication you can take that helps the body to better use the insulin. With sugars that high you need to see your Dr. immediately. If it gets to high you can go into a coma.

Dumb question... but have you ruled out mechanical problems (needles possibly too short, etc.)?

HAVE NOT RULED THAT OUT YET. I DO USE THE 0.3 CC SHORT NEEDLES...... MAYBE I NEED LONGER NEEDLES

It's possible you may need longer needles. You should look into a resistance problem as Barryh suggested.

How long have you been using the vial of insulin? Is it possible it's spoiled? Try opening a new one and see if that works any better. Also, try rolling the vial gently before drawing up a syringe to make sure it's mixed properly.

I have to wonder if you've taken a steroid in the last day or so. My blood sugar went up really high starting about 12 hours after taking one several years ago and it took several days to get it back down again.

Jared, I am new to this forum but I have had the disease for 14 years. Judging from your other posts on different threads, you are having some significant problems controlling your diabetes. I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to keep your blood sugar below 140. Hopefully once you get the pump you will get it under control. Good Luck.

that part of the game. getting it under control. we are looking at a pump right now but before that i need to attend a Carb counting clinic. then we can get on tract with pump....

I agree with mixing your insulin and/or trying a longer needle.

Maybe this is all still new to me but I would freak if Thomas had a bg of more than 500!!

I always use:

Thigh
stomach
posterior



when I'm running high I check 2 things

1. is my carb counting off somewhere

2. date of Long Lasting insulin--has it gone bad{even tho my fasting numbers might be good with long lasting gone bad, my 2 hour post meal numbers go through the roof}

the other way to check long lasting is to check your numbers when you first get up---if they're way up then it might be time to get new vial

Your body also becomes increasingly resistant to insulin as your blood sugar increases. I have noticed this many times. If my bg goes over 200, I have to inject large amounts of insulin to get it back into the target range.

This becomes very confusing. You end up doing a lot of guessing. Reducing the volatility of blood sugars and not letting them rise too high is a lot of work, but it really pays off.
