I just started taking metformin 3 days ago and my muscles feel real weak in my shoulders, arms and legs. Has anybody else had this side effect?

I had a overall sick feeling but not specifically muscle weakness. If you are taking low carb (or very low carb) that could make you feel weak too.

As I recall, muscle pains can be a symptom of Metformin. I have been having a pain in my middle back sudt to the right of my spine, and I can't figure out what pain relievers I can take. Does anyone know id Ibuprofen is dafe to take? I'm also taking Lisinopril.

My doc knows I take 1200 mg of Ibu almost every day & never said there's a problem with that, even though I'm on Met. I don't know about Lisinopril though.

I have not had muscle problems taking Met (on it since 2000). There have been times that I get leg cramps, but I always thought it was because I had eaten the wrong thing (like ice cream). I figured it was a reminder that I should not have that.

Bev,

As has been suggested it could be as a result of a reduced carb/calorie intake, I suppose it could also be your body getting used to a reduced blood sugar level.

If the pain persists I would advise you to speak to your doctor. When necessary I do take ibuprofen, I'm in Metformin and Enap. I would again say check with your Doctor, especially if you have other medical conditions such as Asthma (to my knowledge brufen is not suitable for people with Asthma).

Also bear in mind that Metformin can take a number of weeks to take full effect.

Muscle pain is a symptom that you need to stop taking Crestor or other statins ... they can potentially build up in the liver and cause the release of toxins that trigger muscle pain ... Glucophage does not have that type of reaction.

Is there any chance that you're also on a statin?

Thanks everybody for your help. I stopped taking the metformin over the weekend until I could call the Dr. and the problem went away. He is putting me on Amaryl and have to go get my labs done. One other question, Im just saw today that my meter was coded wrong, do not know for how long. what kind of differance will that make in my readings?
