If ketogenic bad breath is not caused by ketones then what is causing it and what does one do to get rid of the problem??
It makes it awfully difficult to have a nice date if your breath
smells of ketones.<smile> Some of us might be more interested
than others in having a nice smelling breath!!
Enquiry minds want to know??

Some causes of halitosis:
-Food or beverages consumed (such as cabbage, garlic, raw onions, or coffee)
-Vitamin supplements (especially in large doses)
-Poor dental hygiene
-Dentures
-Cavities
-Tobacco smoking
-Alcoholism
-Throat infection
-Sinusitis
-Lung infection
-Gum disease (gingivitis, gingivostomatitis)
-some other causes (ketones).
Home remedy cures I found online for the treatment of halitosis:
-Chew some cardamom seeds to sweeten your breath.
-Chew parsley. The leaves are rich in chlorophyll, nature's own deodorizer.
-There are also chlorophyll tabs (offered in health stores) that are said to fight halitosis internally.
-Making sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day.
-Brush your tongue daily.
-Chewing sugar free gums, breath mints, and lozenges (a way of stimulating salivary flow).
-After you eat a meal or snack which is high in protein make sure you clean your mouth promptly and thoroughly. (The bacterial waste products that are the common cause of bad breath are produced when oral anaerobic bacteria digest proteins.)
Hope that helps. All you ever wanted to know about bad breath for a lifetime. lol

Bad breath is one of the things I remember Thomas having before he was diagnosed (almost a year before). Even with brushing his teeth atleast 3x a day and using adult mouthwash! I do notice when his bgs are running high, but no ketones, his breath smells.
When one runs high and is close to having and having ketones, one will have a bad tast in ones mouth. The actual breath of one with ketones is exactly like that of fruit flavored Certs. It is pungent and will dominate over any and all foul smelling breath. This will not be a small oder it will be the main noticeable fruity smell on ones breath. But your mouth will taste terrible.

"Ketobreath" is really called "protein breath" of dieters and some
who are low carbing and high or low proteining it. Now that doesn't mean not to do that but one may need to make some
adjustments.
One might think they are in ketosis and burning off fat causing this kind of breath but in fact it's Protein. Quite often temporary
solns of drinking more water or using mints help but not for long.
The protein in your diet can be too much or too little and can be explained best by reading this article:
http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/ketobreath.htm
The soln for "Ketobreath" is to calculate your bodies protein
needs and by using some healthy nuts and healthy oils as substitutes. You can read about it in the article.
I just found it an interesting article and the more I educate
myself about this condition the more I may find out ways to help myself.

Thanks for all the good suggestions here for bad breath.
I can see there are many causes and many solns.
I am interested in trying a few like cardammon seeds. Hmmmmm
A friend of mine said his breath from one insulin was referred to
as "buffalo breath". I think that might have been by his wife.
I always got a kick out of that nickname.
Careful on using mouthwashes though as some can destroy the
mouths normal flora and cause more problems for us than it's worth.
