Don't hurt me too much.
I know, that you have Repeatedly warned me about over-extending my Lantus vials.
Well, it finally really bit me in the posterior.
Spent this whole week trying to get B/G 2 hour post meal readings down. Finally, after 5 days, they're moving back into the normal range, from the 175/9.7 to back below 120/6.6 range.
I aresn't gonna try an stretch Lantus past 5 weeks No More.
Perhaps it's a good thing you can't contact my wife 'cause y'alled gang up on me big time.

Wow. Well, hey, look at how long you got to use the vials before w/o any problems. Probably saved yourself quite a wad of cash, eh?
I'm glad you're getting your sugars back down!

rzrbks,
I have also just tried my luck with using the same Lantus vial until it didn't work anymore. The recommended useful life limit of 28 days just didn't make sense to me. Anyway, things were fine until week seven. Quite suddenly, my blood sugars started going very high. And I had difficulty bringing them down into the target range. My confusion was compounded by the fact that I had just switched from Humalog to Novorapid.
I started a new vial 3 days ago and things are settling down again. In the future, I will get Lantus in 1,5ml pen cartridges. Each cartridge will last a month.
Cheers,
Mark

Unfortunately, we can't get Lantus in the pen over here.
Bush and Cheney "Friends" don't make enough money selling the pens, too much used, not enough wasted.

~My BS's are on the rise again too. After reading the posts on the life of Lantus-28 days-I decided to call my pharmacist. First he told me that it shouldn't expire until the date (unopened)on the bottle.
Then I told him about reading info on the web...and he checked the info he had on Lantus and said that 28 days opened was the max. He said that he learned something new too. Btw, my vial is dated 9/08/04. Alittle old?
He asked me if my levels were higher than normal over the past couple of weeks-yes I told him. He said it's time for a new bottle.
Does that mean the pharmacist doesn't deal with Lantus that much? Are other insulins that way too-having a short opened shelf life?

It depends on the insulin and who you're talking to. The Lantus is officially no good 28 days after being opened, I go about 30. I can't remember what I was told about Humalog, (I've been on it a very long time) but I usually discard it around 30 days although I'm pretty casual about it.
When I first started on and was on insulin for the first several years I used Regular and NPH and used them for months after opening w/o any noticeable changes. Keep in mind though, that on R and N my sugars were not anywhere near as stable as they are nowadays. I usually discard my NPH about 2 months after opening it.
As for the pharmacist? We're all human. By staying on your own toes, you'll keep others on theirs, too. Good all the way around, don't you think?

P.S. I have always and still do keep my insulin in the fridge before and during use.

Prolly, but as Heather says, we're all human and your pharmacist does have A LOT to deal with.
