Well before eating at my favorite restaurant (Hooters) I checked my sugar and took my insulin, (according to the sliding scale) to prepare for the bredding from the wings, and the fried pickles. After I took my insulin i noticed a tiny bump under the skin, and it was rather tender. So i thought nothing of it and ate my food. About an hour and a half later I started to "Crash" my Bs was 60!! Why would this happen after eating so many carbs, and taking my correct amount of insulin? And what is with the bump?

The insulin probably just pooled under your skin. I had this happen on a few occasions when using shorter needles. I tend to like the needles a bit longer just for this reason. You probably over calculated the breading on the wings.

I am sure you felt awful, but 60 really isn't a "crash". Lousy low, but not a crash.

So the insulin was stuck on the surface of my stomach? Weird. And after awhile the insulin spread correct, that is the reason for the crash?!? Any other pointers you can give me for taking insulin with the pen? What to do and what not to do..........

What were your blood sugars later on?

It sounds like a fat laden meal which slows down digestion of the carbs, you may have gone low 1.5 hours later because the carbs were being delayed.

Probably not. Your injection probably did not make it into the subcutaneous fat layer. It is important that you use the proper length needle and not one that is too short. You also do not want to pinch up the skin before the injection. If you inject deeper than the subcutaneous layer, you can get into muscle and insulin may be absorbed quicker. My guess is the lump you had was caused by insulin that was just under the skin, but not into the subcutaneous fat layer. This insulin is absorbed slower.

I think you just over estimated the amount of carbs in your meal.

Looking at the nutritional info on chicken wings from Hooters --

Serving size of 5 wings is 62.6 grams of fat and 24.9 grams of carbs and almost 50 grams of protein.

Add in some fried pickles which would be even more fat, that is a meal where the carbs would be very slow to reach the bloodstream.

so you suggest that i do not pinch the skin while taking insulin? i use auto shields on the ends of the pen if that helps any....
