I currently take 9 u of lantus in the am - my sugars are good until about 6 where they begin to climb - does anyone have any suggestions as to how /when i should add a second dose of lantus?
I took a single dose of Lantus for several years, but switched to Levemir a couple of years ago for various reasons. At any rate, I began to split my dose after I also discovered that I was not getting anything like 24 hour coverage. I was on something like 18 units of Lavemir at 10:30 PM. I now take 13u at bedtime and 7u when I wake up. My doctor and I figured out that I could not split it 50/50, for several metabolic reasons, and that the main injection whould be in the evening, with a sort of booster in the morning. This seems to work for me--YMMV, so go slow and work with your health care team.

i was never one a single dose, for some reason, my doc has me on 44 in the mid-morning and 44 around bedtime, i've had a few more lows during the day, even when i only take 5 to 10u of humalog instead of my 30...
as for your problem, i was first ask your doctor if adding a second dose would be a good idea, it might just be that you need a bit more in the morning or if you're on other insulin, perhaps a booster around 5pm would be a good idea...
since none of us are doctors, much less your doctor, we can't really tell you what to do, other than tell you to talk to your doc...

I initially split the daily dose 50/50 and 12 hours apart - it's as good a place to start as any IMO. After some dose adjustment experiments I now do 3U at 7am and 4U at 7pm.

Everyone is different. After several years of 32 units of Lantus in the morning, I recently switched to 24 in the am and 8 before bed. This gives me good morning numbers. To me, 9 doesn't sound like enough, but you need to work with your doctor, and actually an endo would be better at this.

My Doctor and I decided to split my lantus dose 50/50 every 12 hours.
