Thank God it happened at work. I took lantus at 1730, last night, it peaked at 2300( i don't care what the company says, it has a peak.) right after I bolused for dinner. Within 30 minutes I was hot, then woosy, got tunnel vision, started to sweat like a pig, (I mean I was saturated when it was all finished) the last thing I remember was a finger stick that said 38mg/dl. I remember thinking" no problem, I can fix this, I have been lower than that" Next thing i knew , i was on a gurney with warm blankets, shaking like a leaf in a storm, covered in sweat. My coworker says I was totally lucid during the event, answering questions correctly. Apparently I kept saying " i am fine, just really hot. " But I remember feeling really chilled from the sweat. I don't have recollections of this event other than just prior to going out. I DO remember that I felt like ****. Finally when I was able to check my bs was 97. That was after a chocolate donut and apple juice. I am really glad this happened at work. I pretty sure if this happened at home my husband would have freaked out.

I'm really glad you're okay. I've not been that low before, the low 50's completely freak me out as I start getting stupid at about 55-60 lol. Nice reason though, to have a chocolate donut and apple juice :)

Good points about lows: You can probably afford to eat one of your favorite snacks at that point.
Bad points about lows: Everything else
Glad you're okay. Lows are scary ****.

I agree- Lantus does have a peak, (at around 6 hours) though not as pronounced as NPH. Still, it does affect the BG enough to have to consider it. When I split my dose, I first tried dinner as my evening shot, but I found I was waking up with hypos around 1-3 am. Then, someone here (sorry, I forget who it was) posted the Lantus curve. This enabled me to calculate when I really needed the evening dose- at bedtime, so my morning BG would be good (which was the reason I needed to split it).
BTW, I eat the good stuff as long as my low is between 45-60. If it's below 45, I go right for the glucose tablets. My favorite flavor is coconut.

Where do you work that they have gurneys?
I'm not clear whether you came out on your own or somebody actually administered aid. Though its good great you came out unscathed.

I can empathize with you. When I have a very low bg, I'm covered in sweat and shivering at the same time. I never understood why the ER people give you warm blankets until I was in there and needed one after a severe (read: unconscious) low. Glad you had qualified help around you. Hope you are doing better and don't have a headache that feels like you drank alcohol all night. Hang in there. :)

Wow, it can happen so fast. One of my scariest times was when i was out in the woods of northern California working for the forest service. I remember realizing i was about to go hypo, and trying to grab my snickers bar which i had for just such an event. Next thing i remember, my friends making me eat that snickers bar after pulling me out of a shallow creek i decided to sit down in the middle of. Saved my life. Having good friends that know what to do in such situations is critical. Glad to hear everything is alright.

Scary Lows - Mine was on a hike back in 1983 - two days after my Dad died, and I didn't know he had died. I was on a hike up one of the 53 14,000 peaks in Colorado - Long's Peak, which is a looong but well traveled hike. Up through the final keyhole and at about 14,000 feet, I just felt sick and realized I was low. I ate as quickly as I could, all the gorp I had with me. I really could have fallen off the edge there - yes, there was an edge to the hiking trail there - the path was about 12 inches wide. I just put my back to the mountain, let all the other people pass me by, my friends went up, came back for me and I was fine then and we went down. When I got home that night, my wife said the County sheriff came by to tell us my dad had died - Seattle area. It was a bit of a chilling day - for memory.

Just almost happened to me today. I had just tested and was 81, we were about to make supper when we realized we needed a couple of things from the grocery. I was starting to feel low, but I had just tested. It is just a couple minutes from the house, so Hubby was dropping me off and he was going to the drugstore, we figured we would be home in 15 minutes. I got inside the store and knew I was about to drop...sweating, head pounding, vision blurring. Daughter was with me, made me test, leaning on a grocery cart.... 57. I thought... bad, but I could make it. Few more steps and I knew I couldn't. Then I looked up and there was a whole table full of small plates with cake on them! :D The store was treating customers to celebrate their employees, I think. I ate mine, then was able to think enough to get two glucose tabs from my purse. We were home in a few minutes, I tested and was 60, so ate the hamburger on a bun, with onion and dill pickles and a salad with a little Greek dressing. Two hours later I tested 216! It was a very small piece of cake and the bun only had 17 carbs, salad was mostly lettuce. Tested in another hour and was 120! I did not take any Novolog before eating, maybe I should have???

I'm telling you Penny, it has something to do with shopping. I always go low when I am shopping.
Glad you are ok trailrunner. I have never completely lost consciousness, but have gotten pretty stupid and lost a few minutes to memory loss. I also agree that lantus has a peak of sorts.

This is so true. I always go low while walking around a mall or grocery shopping, even just out running errands.
It got to the point that I now carry......um... a man purse.......for meter, glucotabs, meds, ect...:o
Not cool, but necessary for those annoying hypos.

yet another argument that shopping is in fact a sport....needing to replace carbs as you exercise....LOL....i have to say if im out for a hard days shopping and have lunch i definitely reduce my bolus a little to account for all the running around!

Hey, when Duluth Trading Co. (which caters to the construction trade) offers one, you know they've arrived! Mine is made of firehose material, trimmed with leather. Carries my testing ****, a couple of tins of sardines and some Atkins bars, whatever book I'm reading at the time, checkbook, etc.
