I dont know if anyone can help me out here...

As mentioned in my intro, I've been taking miserable care of myself, and have decided to start taking care of myself correctly.

One thing that has always frustrated me when getting back onto my shots is that if I take my nighttime insulin (novolog to bring me to about 140 and 42 units of Lantus), I will sometimes wake up in the morning with alot of swelling. I'm talking hands, feet, face, everything. Usually only happens when I wake up low, like below 110.

Does this happen to anyone else? I'm thinking it may be dehydration, but I just dont know. Help!

Maybe you should see your doctor about this swelling.

This may not be what you have but I had swelling when I first was diagnosed with diabetes and started Lantus. My feet and hands swelled and I couldn't fit into my shoes. My toes became paralysed. 3 months after starting Lantus, I changed to another insulin and the swelling largely went away. My neurologist said I had inflammatory neuropathy, which is a condition where the tissue around your nerves swells when you first start taking insulin and recommended that I didn't take Lantus anymore. Inflammatory neuropathy is temporary and he said he would be surprised if it didn't go away and I recovered completely.

I think that's what the problem may be.

I'm pulling myself off Lantus tonight... I'll be able to afford to see an endo this week, so I'm going to.

Sadly... it's been about 6 years since I've seen an endo, maybe 7.

Yuck :)

yeah go see a doctor eh...

it could be more serious then just the insulin, like your heart and kidneys... get it checked mate!!!

by the way, don't stop your insulin until you've seen the dr! you'll just get very sick!!!

Yes second don't stop taking your insulin until you see your doctor. I tried that and my readings took 2 months to get back under control. I think you need to get a different insulin first before you even consider stopping Lantus. My doctor wanted me on one basal insulin and basal insulins are very important.
